The Mt. Augustine volcano has been grumbling a lot more during the last few days. Now, it's venting steam, seismic activity is up, and there are signs of mud flows, avalanches, and ash. Even though it's about 170 miles from where I work, we got our first look at the steam plume yesterday, as it drifted by. Fortunately it was a good ways off. I like my ash on the end of my cigar...not in/on everywhere/everything.

For some reason lava always amazes the hell out of me. I love watching those National Geographic shows.

Ditto. I guess it's the incredible power that nature has. Ever try stopping a wave? You can't. Don't ask me how I know.

Erupted again just before 4:00AM this morning, sending steam and ash up to 34,000 feet. The Augustine Island Webcam even looks like it took a fair dusting of ash. Fortunately for us, winds are taking the plume mostly south and east.

Edited to add: From the looks of the webcam, Augustine is completely covered with ash now. Shots from just a day or two ago, it was snow-covered.

Here's the latest satellite image.

Talked to my bud in Anchorage today. He said there was a huge run on face respirators/dust masks. I'm always amazed at how mother nature inspires us to run to Home Depot to buy crap. Good luck to our AK brothers and hope the wind cooperates.

Personally, I have never run to Home Depot to buy something to save me from mother nature. Normally, if nature is trying to get me.........I just run away.

A cowardly retreat sounds much better when you call it a "Mandatory evacuation". :)
