Ok, I gotta vent a little so here goes.
Part of the business I work for is also a hardware store. In the hardware store we have 2 carpet cleaners we rent out. Well nobody really rents them, the employees pretty much just use it as they need it. During the recent Nor'Easter a little water came in and a small section of the carpet in the bedroom got wet, an area about 3' by 6'. So I went up to work and picked up the one carpet cleaner that still works but the upholstery attachment wasn't there. I had to call just about all the employees that have used it to locate it then go out of my way to meet the person who didn't return it to get it.
I was planning on just using the attachment so I didn't have to move a lot of big furniture out of the way to get the machine in there. I start to hook it up only to realize a fitting is missing so I can't use the attachment. No biggie, I'll just move all the furniture and use the machine. I have used carpet cleaners before so I know the drill and fill it up. I start using it and it isn't sucking the water back up like it should. I take it apart examine everything and put it back together. Still doing the same thing, so I say F.. it and just charge ahead.
I go over the area 3 or 4 times and then start noticing that smoke is now starting to come out of the machine, so I quickly finish up and cut it off. At this point I am pretty pissed off.... I know this machine didn't decide to take a dump on me now, it has probably been like this for a while. The part that bothers me is the fact that the employee who had the attachment at his house probably knew it was missing a piece and that is why he didn't return it. Also, the last person who used it probably knew it wasn't working right, but returned it as is and left it on the floor to be rented.
It really chaps my ass that people do this. Had it been me I would have said something to the owner and if I broke it/lost a part I would have fessed up and done what it takes to fix it. I think it bothers me more because here I am spending two days trying to get my place back in order after a big storm. I can't say that I am suprised that people do stuff like this, it just bothers me that it was one of my co-workers.
