Today I went out to lunch with a friend of mine and we decided to eat at King's Cafe on Beale St in Memphis. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Memphis, great catfish and it has been there for ages so there is a lot of history. Well we parked a block or so away and we were headed to the cafe when we are approached by a bum. He was busy chatting us up as he took us for tourists and my friend quickly let him know that he was a local, hoping to stump him leave him speachless. Well that did not work, this guy was good. He said this to us: "Man I aint here waisting your time with no bullshit. I aint hungry, my kids dont need diapers, I aint got an empty gas can asking for gas money. I just want a cold beer. I got fifty cents and I need two more dollars so I can get me a cold beer." I was shocked to hear such honesty!!!! I gave him a five and told him to have the one he just worked for and to have another one on me! That was the best five bucks I have spent in a long time.

In Chicago I had a street person offer to escort our group and to fend off the other bums for a couple of bucks. It worked great, anyone who approached, he got rid of. We gave him $20. for about a twenty minute walk back to our hotel.

There is a guy is San Luis Obispo that does just that. Well dressed and clean with a sign that saya, "I could lie to you but I just need beer money". He had a roll of ones as big as my fist. and Yep I gave him a buck.

I have heard about this in Chicago. That is a nice racket they have going there. I wonder if any of the Chicago families get a piece of that. I would think the would be o fond of a free lance protection racket like that unless the getting their piece. :assaultri:

That guy is just a career bum. I would of just told him to F-off.
Maybe in these hard times they can petition Congress for a "rescue plan" too!

I only help out the local homeless shelter with $$ for food as those folks really are down on their luck and hopefully looking for a way out.
