Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in Life and forget what's really going on all around you. I know I'm guilty of it. You just get so busy you forget to stop and look around.
Today is the memorial service of a very young man here in town. Great kid. Friend of my son, they worked together at Pizza Hut. For some unknown reason, the seemingly happy young man shot himself last week.
My boy took it pretty hard. He's angry and wants to know why he did it. What can you say?
We all have crap we're going through. My wife and I are still battling an insurance company over the loss of our house and practically everything we owned almost 2 years ago. Living in a camp trailer and taking Life one day at a time.
Last night, we decided to go out to dinner, something we hardly ever do. Turns out, it's Prom night here. I watched as a young couple take a table adjacent to us. He was in a suit, she a nice dress, not a fancy Prom gown, but a nice dress. A few minutes after they were seated 3 more prom couples came in dressed to the hilt. Huge flowing gowns, top of the line Tuxedos etc and they were ushered to a private room. I couldn't help but notice the look on the young couples face next to us. He looked almost embarrassed. I felt miserable.
Prom night 1984 was my first "Official" date with my now wife. We'd been friends since we were 11 years old. I didn't have a lot of money to spend on it. Bartered a Limo from a funeral home for the ride there. I think I might have known how that kid last night felt.
When our waiter brought us the bill, I asked if he'd add a couple of their top desserts to our bill and take them to the young couple when they were ready. Not a big thing. A little thing. Something I hoped would make their night just a little more special. Something they'll maybe remember.
I've been the recipient of acts of random kindness before and it really can go a long way to making your day just a little better. I'm going to do my part whenever I am able to. Today, I'll have to help my son get through a very tough part of Life, but he will get through it, with a little help.
I Hope everyone here has an absolutely fantastic day, but if there's something deep down inside you that's eating away at you, don't be afraid to turn to a friend. Talk to someone. Do something for someone else. It helps. The little things can make a difference to you and those around you.
