I almost bought a new car this weekend but decided to wait a few more years. I have a 2001 toyota tacoma V6 with 116,000 miles on it. It runs great!

My mechanic says it will cost $700.00 for a new timing belt. Should I have a new one put on, our risk it since I only plan to keep it another couple years?

I drive mostly freeway miles 50 miles total per day M-F.

If you put a new timing belt on it, that truck will last another 100,000 miles. YOu always have to have a truck. I would, cheap investiment, but the price seems a little high. Yeah I know, we are in Cali.

While they are doing that have them check the water pump. If it goes out later it is the same disassembly work to fix that as the changing the belt so that would be hundreds of dollars more in labor.

Replace it. If the belt breaks, and it will, the engine will be shot! There will be no warning, you will be driving along with everything normal and then WHAM, blown engine! Alot more $$$$ to replace the engine. Hard to sell with a blown engine.

Agreed, actually just had mine done anyway since it was only a few bucks more.

Do it yourself. I got $1,900 knocked off a car once because it was time to replace the belt. Ended up doing it myself, total cost $400 in parts and 30 hours of frustration! :)

Just change the water pump as well. Back in December I replaced the timing belt, harmonic balancer (it cracked), and the water pump. Parts and labor cost me just shy of $800. My Xterra has 144,000 miles. Better to be safe than sorry.
