I've googled this and can't seem to find any info.

I was placing some new cigars in my humidor today and noticed that all of my cigars have absolutely minuscule little white hairs on them. Not in any particular area, they're all over. And when I say tiny, I mean it - they're about as long as a piece of paper is thick.

The only reason I saw them was the way the light reflected at that particular moment.

I assume they've always been there and I've just never noticed. So, what are they? Is it just part of the leaf used as a wrapper - the same way that many leaves on other plants have nigh-microscopic layers of hair or "fuzz" on their leaves?

I'm not grossed out, just curious!

I'd take a picture if I had a good quality digital camera. Unfortunately with my cell phone there's no way you'd be able to make it out.

From the description it sounds like mold. Are they growing from patches? Mold can take many different forms. Is it on every cigar in the humidor or only on a few?

If it looked like this, it is good for a cigar and it is referred to as either "Plume" or "Bloom".

Yep, that's what it looks like, albeit subtler than in that photo.

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the very fine white crystals you see on really good pot.

Just keep an eye on your humidity and if you notice the slightest bit of green or blue patches you'll need to fix the proble quickly. Once mold gets inside the cigar is done for! If it's just like someone lightly dusted them like a bakers roll it's just plume.

it may not be bloom. if it wipes of then it might be. if it doesnt it might not be. tobacco leaves are naturally "fuzzy"

all you may be seeing is that natural fuzz. the curing/fermentation process often results in the loss of the fuzz. sometimes it doesnt.

i cant say fort sure without seeing it in person.

Interesting that the problem has spread to the entire contents of the humidor. Are all the sticks the same kind or do you have different brands? Also, are all of them out of the cello? What is the percent of moisture in your humidor? It seems unlikely that different brands would all exibit plume simultaneously unless it was a side effect of storage. It would probably be a good idea to sterilize your humidor when you get a chance, and please post a pic if you can....

If it's on all of the smokes, my guess is that you have noticed, very early on, a mold problem in it's begining stages.

NOT TO WORRY.

Wipe it off, and reestablish your humidor.

What are you using for humidification?

I'm staring at one now. It has tiny little hairs on it, but the ain't white. And I'll bet while every cigar may have them, they aren't going to be white or the same on every cigar in the humi. White hairs on every cigar is why I say mold.
