Shared a bottle with my bro-in-law last night. We had some Round Table pizza and watched some boxing (Andrade vs Stieglitz, Casamayor vs Katsidis and the rebroadcast of Marquez vs Pacquiao ... all good fights!)

This wine is from the small winemaker family of Michael + Vickie Eckert in Livermore, CA. Their output is about 2500 cases / yr and most of their selections are quite good IMO. Their tasting room is a small shack in front of their metal barn where they make wine and olive oils. We almost did not see it when we first drove by last summer.

I decanted this Zinfandel for about an hr before drinking. The alcohol is at 15.2%, which is pretty high, but this wine is not hot at all. The color is dark brick / garnet. The nose is not huge, but very good - consisting mostly of dark cherry, brown sugar and some mild spices. The fruit flavors are very pure ... lots of black cherry, black raspberry and a touch of pepper. The tannins are well integrated and the finish is long. It really went well with the pizza.

Overall an excellent Zinfandel and a decent value @ $18. I've never seen this sold anyplace other than the winery.

Do you find that decanting always improves flavors?
With young red wines (10 yrs old or younger) ... you definitely need to decant. Most actually need several hours to breathe for the flavors and aromas to open up fully. A few Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends I've tried actually tasted best 2 days after opening.

"Teenage" red wines (10-20 years old) ... you need to taste and determine. Some need a little time, others are good to go right after opening. Some will have sediment - others not at all.

Very mature red wines (20+ years old) ... really don't need much if any decanting to open up - in fact the taste + aroma of real old wines may actually start to fade once the bottle is opened. Most will have significant accumulated sediment.

I don't drink much white or rose wine, but they are generally made for their lighter, crisp flavors so no decanting is needed.

Thanks for the info. :thumbsup: I'll have to get me a decanter. I usually just pour it in a glass and if it's not right then I'll let the red wine sit for 30 min. to an hour.
