This winery is about a 45 min drive from my house - over on the ocean side of the Santa Cruz Mtns. I visited early this past summer and was surprised to find this merlot on closeout sale. It went very well with the chicken + apple sausages (Costco) that they were grilling up that day (and since :skew.
This wine has a beautiful dark garnet color. The aromatics are a mixture of red and blue fruit reduction, vanilla and mixed flowers. The flavors are big and bold - this ain't your fathers' merlot! Lots of cherries, plums and blackberries with a solid backbone of tannins. A dose of acidity is noticeable on the finish which is very, very long. Unfortunately the acidity will leave you with a slight metallic aftertaste if it's not accompanied by food. Still, this is an excellent effort overall. 14% ABV.
