That's something you don't see in Nicaragua. They keep it from happening to prevent cross pollination.

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shots. Saw this once in Cigar Press, must be awesome to see this in person.

You know... thinking back... When I was 8, after my mom passed away, we took a roadtrip to my uncle's house in Ripley, Ohio... and I vaguely remember seeing tobacco flowers, because they had a few fields around, and he had a few ornamental tobacco plants in his yard. That memory just dawned on me.

I wonder how/if flowering affects the tobacco leaf flavor. Anybody have any idea?
I do not believe so. When we were in Nicaragua i recall them saying that they cut the flowers off most the plants as they develop. They leave the ones that are on plants that show good development, and cover them with a bag of sorts to keep cross fertilization from various crops in nearby fields.

It doesn't. They allow the plant to grow to a certain size, then snap off the top of it, which causes it to grow out, instead of up. When they want seeds, they allow it to grow, then cover the flower with a plastic and paper bag to collect the seeds. It keep any cross pollination from happening, which is important when you have so many different strands of tobacco growing in one area.
