Gauge and length being equal, when comparing these two vitolas for the same cigar, I'm just wondering why one would go with the torpedo. The only reason I can think of is if you think the draw in the toro is too much. So basically, what I'm wondering is, if you like the draw after the toro is cut, is there any reason to opt for the torpedo of the same cigar? Would there ever be a taste (blending) difference in the two sizes if the length is somewhat similar?
This also brings up the fact that you start cutting down the torpedo immediately, so right away, you get less time out of it than a toro.
As an example, I just smoked the MFLB 1922 in torpedo. To get the draw I like, I had to cut it down so far that I was scared of getting below the cap line. I loved the cigar and am looking to buy a 5 pack and am wondering if I should just get the toro instead.
I once heard (I think it was Steve Saka or Nick Malilo) say that most cigars are initially blended to the toro size (and then adjusted to the other sizes)... I'm sure there are exceptions to this but I can see it being a general rule.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Don't know about Toro vs Torpedo but I know that the MFLB petite robusto (and the CG if you can get it) are way better than the other MFLB sizes.

I dont have a preference when it comes to taste or style but I do tend to smoke more Torpedo's on the golf course since they are easy to bite down on and keep in your mouth. I have only had tar issues with an Anejo and draw issues seem to be random or manufacturer based so I guess I buy more based on where Im going to smoke them/how much time do I want to set aside for a cigar, rather than how they will smoke. I dont smoke too many long cigars either, I've only had a handfull of Churchills and never had a Lancero. So I dont choose Toro too often either.

I've hear a few people say the CG in general is the best size flavor wise. I've never tried one, but definitely will be soon. I never get much of a nicotine kick even from the strongest cigars (which sucks as I do enjoy a good nic kick), so I might as well try and maximize flavor.
I can see how a different gauge or length affects flavor with different wrapper to filler ratios and stuff (which is why I wonder about the usefulness of the torpedo when compared to the toro).

My size of choice is either corona or robusto, so I don't smoke many of the other sizes. With that said, when it comes to torpedoes, I'm similar to you. To get the draw I like, I usually have to cut them way down, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the tapered tip. Personally, If I HAD to choose between a torpedo or a toro, it would be the toro. I'm sure there are others here who love torpedoes, and will list the reasons why.

If I knew one vitola of a specific brand smoked better then that may influence me, but generally I would go with the torpedo as I enjoy the feel of the tapered end in my mouth.

Sticking to the question in the op - toro v torp - I go with the torp because they can stand up to the dickman cut and then I can direct the draw in my mouth. Also, tar and draw issues are easier to resolve with a dickman on a torpedo.

not the same guage or length, therefore not equal............torps 6.1x 52 are made to approximate the same level of taste for the entire smoke.
toros 6x50 start out milder and build in strength.
other "toro" (52,54,etc) or "torpedo" (54,56,etc) sized sticks are outside the traditional sizes and do not apply, generally.

corona gorda is a Cuban size 5 5/8 x46.........not many outside of Cuba.better wrapper to filler ratio, and therefore more flavorful than torps or toros.

"most cigars are initially blended to the toro size"
traditionally cigars were blended to the corona size.this was when all companies made a corona, which was the most popular size.
Now,I feel that most cigars are blended to the robusto size, toro being next.
toro and robusto sizes probably account for 70 % of the sales for most companies, churchills about 10 %.
who would have ever guessed that ANYONE would want to smoke a 60 ring gauge cigar.

I personally prefer a torpedo for no other reason other than its more comfortable and I like the look. Im vein like that. I have found that its all in what ya like. When the option arises for a piramide, I really get excited with that taper. Eastern Standard Cakewalk.

I think it really depends on your personal comfort.

While I do have a smaller mouth and the torpedo feels more comfortable, the potential drawbacks (tight draw, tar build up, and even unraveling due to having to make multiple cuts) far outweigh the slight increase in comfort, so I prefer toros.

That being said toro is far from my favorite size anyways. I'll take a lancero or corona any day of the week.

I would disagree that a Torp and a Toro or the same size or same blend. I would say most Torps have a little bigger ring gauge than the same brands Tore but of course a Torp is just a shape and can come in many different sizes. As far as you picking between the two of a certain brand would be trying both cigars.

Myself, I'm not a fan of a Torp or really any shape other than just the plain oh Parejo. But of course I stray from time to time.

Torpedo has always been my favorite. Just the way it sits on my mouth, I can sit back and relax and not have to worry as much about holding it. Box-pressed + torpedo = bonus!!!!

I like both pyramides and belicosos for purely aesthetic reasons. Anybody else like opening up a box of BBF's or R&J Belicosos? Those beautiful tapered beauties just begging to be smoked ?
