Wow. So after the herf, I rented a car and headed up to a little town in up-state NY called Horseheads. My child-hood buddy is a Police Captain up that way and it's been way, way, way too long since we've gotten together. He has two beautiful daughters and an adorable little boy that it was fun to spend some time with and his wife was gracious enough to allow me to steal most of my buddy's time while I was there. It was a very short trip, and I hope to make it up there again soon, hopefully with the wife in tow and spend a bit more time.
So, while I was up there, we did a short tour of some of the wineries on Lake Seneca. I'm no wine connoisseur, but still enjoy a good dry red and enjoy exploring different tastes. My buddy did all of the driving, which was a good thing as it didn't take long for me to start noticing the accumulation of all of those sips of wine. There are upwards of 50 wineries around the lake, but we only hit a small portion of those (10 I believe). I believe there are only 36 wineries actually part of the "Seneca Lake Wine Trail", though. We started out at the south of the lake at Lakewood Vineyards making our way up towards the Glenora Wine Cellars and up to Hickory Hollow Wine Cellars and then back down the other side of hte road ending at Cascata Winery.
Needless to say I brought too much wine home with me. I would say my favorite tasting was the Reserve Room tasting at Glenora where they paired everything with cheese or chocolate and where all of the bottles tasted where limited and only available if you did the tasting. Next had to be Cascata Winery as the woman working there was the nicest and most outgoing of the people we dealt with.
On our way out we hit the Watkins Glenn area to check out some of the falls. Beautiful area, just awesome. Again, I could wish we had some more time, but it was still a great half-day. I'll try to add some pictures below.
Yeah, my buddy convinced me to let him take this shot after about the third winery at something like 11 in the am.
The gorge at Watkins Glen.
My buddy checking out the scenery while having a smoke.
Some butt-ugly dude with a cigar in his mouth.
A pic of the falls.
