I've figured out over the last few years that I prefer English and Irish beers generally (but not stouts so much). I really enjoy Sam Smith Pale Ale, Belhaven, Fullers, Harp, Irish reds, etc. I'm hoping you can provide me some suggestions of UK (or UK style) beers that may be a bit off the beaten track that I ought to try. Any suggestions?

English beer. Yum. I'm a sucker for browns. So Sam Smith Nut Brown and Newcastle is always in the rotation. St. Peter's stuff is pretty good. No stouts, really?! :) Such a shame. Lots of tasty stouts from the UK.

Yeah... I like stouts, but haven't been into the heavy stuff lately. I guess I'd like to hear your thoughts on stouts too since I tend to stick to Guinness when I'm in that sort of mood.

Greenking Old Suffolk is a great and interesting beer. I cant think of more at the moment but I will get back to you. I am trying to remember the English styles that are still English and not American craft brewing influenced really.

The beer that drew me to the UK was Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter and their open slate ferrmenters. The salts in the Burton on Trent water makes for an amazing flavor in their ales. Other favorites below:

Fuller's ESB
Old Peculiar
Young's Double Chocolate Stout
Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale
Wells Banana Bread Beer

In an attempt to keep more threads on topic, I knocked off the American ones from the list... and beamish, too, by accident. (but there is no 'undo' on my tapatalk)

Some other beers from the UK and Republic of Ireland that I like are good ol Boddingtons, Old Speckled Hen, Kilkenny, and Wexfords. Also a fan of Fullers London Porter, and London Pride.

Stationed in the UK and there are some good British ales on here! Don't forget Black Sheep Ale, Hook Norton, and Hobgoblin. Man I could use a pint right now!

I'm having a Guinness Red Harvest Stout. Not bad. More like a heavy ale than a stout.

Sean had some good ones: Boddingtons, Old Speckled Hen, London Pride, etc. These I believe are Bitters or Best Bitters. I would look for the ones that come in the nitro bottle (the ones with the widget) and would not drink them too cold.

Look for a English pub near where you live and order anything they have in hand pump. Might be the closest to real English ale, but it is likely to be way colder than what you get in England.

Good luck!
