I have seen it happen....

Also, as a frequent traveler, I seem to think it takes some pretty big people to require this policy to be enforced. I think the two seat rule is appropriate....

Why:

Selfishly - I would hate to get stuck in the middle seat next to a 'customer of Size" and another person

Business - Everything in the airline industry is based on seat miles flown. If a person causes the airline to not be able to sell a seat because they are taking up two seats, then the fair should be based appropriatly. Also, weight is a factor in how much it costs to fly someone.

The important thing is to ensure that this policy is know before the ticket is purchased. From the article, it appears that the "Silent Bob" guy knew the policy"

I'm a big guy, but don't think I am close to the "customer of size" at issue, but I certainly take up all of my seat when on an airplane. If you can't fit in one seat you should have to buy a second ticket. Airline seats are small enough as it is. I don't need to share half my seat with someone who doesn't fit in theirs. From the sounds of the article it sounds like Smith fit in a single seat, so I'm not sure what the problem was.

Yeah I agree, I'm not exactly a frequent flier but I do usually board a commercial airliner a couple times a year and the one thing I always fear before boarding is being stuck next to that person that isn't a "customer of size" but still big enough to make you feel uncomfortable about moving in your seat.

On a side note, I'd always imagined a guy like Kevin Smith would be flying first class where something like this wouldn't really be an issue.

I saw this on the news this morning. He is going to champion this cause and make a stink for Southwest airlines doing this. He is a pretty big dude though.

I don't think Southwest Airlines offers First Class Seating - so that's moot ~:0)

I'm a fairly frequent flyer and have to tell you, I agree 100% with this policy in general. Whether it was applied to him appropriately or not, I do not know.

But in my trip home from Vegas on American Airlines this week, I was stuck in a middle seat next to a man who took up 1/3 to almost half of my seat, no way he could get the arm rest down. It was absolutely the worst 4 hours of my 15 year traveling career. The flight was completely full, so there was no moving for anyone. I honestly had to take a shower at midnight when I got home because of 4 hours of this mans flab and ass laying on top of my leg.

A good friend of mine is a veteran captain on SouthWest and he told me about their policy for big flyers and that it is unique in the industry. I sure wish that policy would catch on.

I'm sorry, I paid near $600 for my seat. I want and have paid for my seat.

I fly all of the time and if you think this is unfair just get stuck in the window or middle seat once. I saw a guy get upgraded to 1st on US Air once because he was so big and people complained.
