Some new info to raed on this issue...check it out!!
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/iran-may-captured-u-stealth-drone-hacking-gps-030447469.html

Wasn't sure if this should have been posted in the Politicle thread so...Mods feel free if needed.
This could be major trouble for the U.S.. I'm not sure why they don't have a self destruct mechinism for these sort of mistakes. I wonder if Iran is the next target for our troops...Interesting to say the least.

I dont think that its that big a deal. The US decided not go to in and try to destroy it. Although no official word, most are saying that we can wipe out electronic data remotely. Also, the stealth technology used in this is over 20 years old, and China already has the technology. So nobody will be able to catch up with us overnight because of what they learn from the drone

Obama said today that no options are "off the table" as far as dealing with Iran. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

As for the drone, as Ron has said, I don't see it being a big deal if they get a look at it.

Yeah and its not the first time it happend. In fallujah hodgee hacked in and gained control over a drone when we were trying to take the city. Just some things that CNN doesn't tell you.

The only problem is a technological advancement one - and it's not about the stealth technology that others already possess. The danger is sold information to countries like China or Russia who aren't yet using the advanced radar and sensor array systems on board.

Here's the released video from Iran:

This is exactly what I'm worried about. Maybe Iran can't reverse engineer it but China and Russia will have one flying by next week (you know what I mean). I still think there should be a self destruct capability aboard these.
Here is the latest with new video...

This will end up in Russia ... they have tons of old equipment that Iran wants (they sell it to them all the time), and would be eager to trade for this.

He might have jammed it, but as far as I'm aware there's no way to hijack it. Both the terminal and the drone are running security that prevents it, and then the transmissions to/from are secure. Maybe they aren't all the same setup, but I'm speaking about the drones I worked on and supported out at TQ in '06.

The issue isn't the stealth skin and the shape (though that might be a little bit of a worry, it's older tech now). The issue is the cryptographic shit in the computer. I just hope to god the designers would have a safety system installed that if it looses communication after a certain amount of time there is a controlled pyrotechnic that destroys the electronics. If I were designing it I know I goddamn would have. I think it'd be safer to lose one like that in case of a commo error compared to having your multimillion technology being exploited.

By the time they are able to pull anything like that the keys are changed and the process is secure enough on it's own that they couldn't reverse engineer the keys to "guess" the next one. Rest safe in that. Plus, there is no way to extract them without setting off security mechanisms that dump the memory.

That's what I figured. I wasn't a crypto guy but I used some crypto radios from time to time, and had to destroy crypto stuff via detonation from time to time. So I know a little but that really consists of the knowledge of its existence and that you need to get new keys from time to time.

No big problem I think. Iran has already built their own drones. The news about them was leaked a few weeks ago. They are pretty primitive to what we got, but it was bound to happen. Iran has to spy on their neighbors somehow.

I can't speak in detail, as you well know, but I managed the satellite networks that they use to communicate with those things once they leave visual range as well as the data networks all around the AO's. I've got a little experience with the gear...

If someone steals my iPhone I can remotely wipe all data. I'd say it's a safe bet our gov has similar capabilities with our drones.
