Ventilation/Filtration in Bsmt

Going to be doing a little remodeling in the basement, since I'd like to smoke where my computer is, was wondering what you guys thought would be good ideas for venting/filtering air. Since we will be taking some walls down and putting up others, thought it would be a good time to install something in the ceiling. Would like something thats fairly flush as the ceiling is already lower being a basement. Was looking at the rabbit air, but also would like some sort of vent to rid the physical smoke. G1

This is what we're going to do in our basement when we get rolling on it. I know one brother her has gone off this outline and his smoking room is phenomenal. May be a lot of overkill if its going to be just you smoking down there.

On a lesser end, my boss smokes by himself in his basement almost every night and just had one bathroom fan/vent installed right above where he sits and it works great for just him. But, on the occasion that we're both down there, its not enough.

What size is the room you are doing? What is the finished ceiling height going to be? What size spacing do you have in between each floor joist? How many guys max will you have on average down there? (say once a month) Let's start with those and will go from there!

I'm glad someone started this thread. I am looking to do the same thing in my basement.

Right now I have a fan set up in the window to suck the smoke out and another fan in the room pushing the smoke towards the other fan in the window. Lol

Hey J, lets see. The rooms not divided but the general area I"m looking at is approx 15 x 15, basically over my desk area. Finished height is 82", Space between joists is standard (16" from center to center), For the most part, its just for me or at the most a couple of guys but more for just me working at night on computer. I can't have smoke because of my wife. The floor is carpeted so its harder to keep any kind of smell out. LMK and Thanks bro! G1

Well you have ruffly a 1500 cf area. You can go big like the same eductor that I have (1500cfm motor) or you can go much smaller. Your going to have to get rid of the carpet unfortunately. Even with a high output fan your room will never be completely exhuasted. The room may exchange its air so many times a hour but some smoke always settles to the floor. It's essential for me to wipe the floor down once a month. I couldn't imagine a room with carpet. A good wood floor or laminate(basement) is a must. If it's just a couple guys I would build a smaller room. Sounds like that may not be a option. Not really sure the way I read your response. Don't get me wrong...... I love the size of my room but damn it takes a whole lot of everything to make it funciton. Right now it's 16 degrees out and 68 inside. But the heating costs (radiant floor heat and inline fresh air heater) have to be considered. Obviously with a smaller room they get alot easier to handle. Not only the inital cost but the cont operating costs. Also this I can not stress enough. (thus the caps) ANY AIR EXHUASTED MUST BE REPLACED. AND ANY ROOM THAT HAS A DECENT AMOUNT OF EXHAUSTED AIR MUST BE SEALED! If not air from the house/basement will find it's way into the room and outside into the fan. THIS CREATES A NEGATIVE PRESSURE IN YOUR HOME. Not good at all !!!!!!!! If i were doing a room for say four guys (and mainly yourself) I would stick to 10X10. Once you find out the exact size you want you can figure out the venting situation. As far as the smoke and not having the wife smell it.... IT CAN BE DONE! I live with a smoke Nazi lol. And a year later no smoke in the rest of the basement let alone in the upstairs. But the room has to be sealed off. (I used a closed cell foam but damn was it expensive) One last thing a big room that holds say ummmmm 15 is nice but it holds 1 person 90 percent of the time!

Just reread your post one last time. As far as the Rabbit air (which I do own) It's only a back up IMO. Good for bigger parties say 10 guys or more. But it's just that...... A back up. ( A expensive one lol)

Listen to what Mr. JFire is telling you. I have seen his smoking lounge in his basement OMG is all I can say, his set up is better that most cigar lounge's....

Thanks J, replacing the carpet is going to be difficult. We have the carpet down mainly for our dogs, one which is getting up there in age so he has problems with a slippery floor. Eventually we will be replacing the carpet but we need something that has a decent amount of traction for them. The room doesn't have to be completely void of smell, its more the physical smoke. I may just stay with the attic and bear the cold for the winter months and go outside during the summer. I work at a Cigar lounge now so I do get to smoke at work, so that may be enough for now. I may try and close off the area where my desk is and call it an "office" plan wise so we'll see. Will try some rough drafting this weekend. G1
