Looks like they were performing a return to target maneuver to show boat for the ground guys. They were too low and at that elevation the engines didn't have enough power to pull out of the drop.

None of the ground guys were hurt and both pilots lived

Thats looks like a pretty steep AOA at that altitude. That was a wicked ending. Good thing those birds are built tough.

That's what you call a "return to target" manuever gone wrong that got them a "return to the States". Dismissed.

I did that a lot in BF3 until I changed the controls to legacy.
