I am coaching my sons' basketball teams and am just amazed at how they progress from one week to the next, not to mention year to year.
My 5 year olds team only has 2 kids out of 8 that can even make a basket. Both of them finally scored today. Only 4 of the kids showed up for today's game. Those 4 were worn out by the end of the game.
My 8 year old is playing his second season, not even a shot last year. The 2 kids on his team that tend to handle the ball, want the ball, and get the ball were just off today. My son got a rebound in the paint, stopped and looked around, like he didn't know what to do. The kids on his team and half ofthe spectators yelled at him to shoot. He did and scored. This was his first basket and the teams first for the year. This was in the middle of the 4th quarter. On our next two possessions 2 other kids scored. The other team was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. It started to click. We lost 23 to 6 but the kids are starting to understand what is going on.
Eight more games to go for both teams, maybe we'll be able to win a few games and my nerves will hold out.
My son was so excited when he made that shot. He also picked up his first foul today...a little agression seems to help his confidence. I was proud just with the foul.
