A little background: I never smoke around my kids, and up until a few weeks ago, I never really talked about smoking in front of them. Finally, I decided to discuss what I was doing, that I know the health risks, etc with them. My daughter is 9 and already figured it out, and my son, 6, suspected.

Fast-forward a couple weeks and my wife was talking with them, asking what they thought about me smoking. My daughter said she's less worried now that I'm honest about it.
When asked if they want me to quit, my son replied:

"I think someone wants Daddy to keep smoking, because the mail-lady is always bringing him boxes of cigars that people send to him."

When I heard that I about fell on the floor laughing!

I never believed in coveting your children and I still don't. We have a 21 year old and an 11 and both have been raise without hiding things from them. They are both A students, Oldest at WMU, Both have nerdy friends that don't do drugs or disrespect, and both have great confidence. I truely believe parenting (Good Parenting) is how your kids act out in life. That being said I think your youngest is spot on and he will later appreciate your honesty in return.

Communication is one of the best tools when interacting with your children. It's like they must believe everything that you say and they do. I never smoked around mine I would wait till later in the day or when they were sleep until one day I was caught off guard, thats when I had some explaining to do. I still dont smoke around them but now I dont have to worry about blowing my high when they come running daddy...daddy. Great Post
