Today I reached into one of my desktop humidors for something to enjoy and decided upon an A.J. Fernandez New World Connecticut. The cigar was completely wrapped and sealed in cello. When I picked it up the bottom third of the cigar was extremely soft unlike anything else in my humidor. Right now the RH in the humidor is 68% with a freshly calibrated hygrometer.

I’m kind of at a loss for what happened to this or if there is in fact anything actually wrong. I’ve just never felt a cigar this soft in the bottom third. The upper third felt fine and again this thing was in sealed cellophane. I checked the other cigars in the humidor and everything else seemed ‘normal’ to me. I’m including a picture. Cigar smelled normal after removing it from the cello. Right now I have it sitting outside my humidor in case there is something off with it. Pulled a Hoyo De Monterrey from the same humidor and smoked it this afternoon and it was fantastic. Any ideas?

Probably just a bad roll, is the wrapper cracked in any way? If it didn't actually get water on it I'd be surprised moisture is the problem.

It was very soft. It may have been slightly damp it certainly wasn't dripping wet I honestly can't recall. Would cello allow enough water through to make it feel soggy?

The middle is soft the very end of the foot and head feel normal. If that makes any sense. The cigars that were around it seem totally fine.

I've spilled water or celloed cigars, dried them off and placed them back in the humidor without any problems. If all you have is Bovedas in the humidor as mpomario said it's probably not a moisture problem. Light that bad boy up and tell us how it burns! If it duds out in the soft spot then it's probably water, if it burns hot and fast in the middle then it's probably a loose roll.

A Boveda is an unlikely source of this moisture. However, it isn’t impossible. Even if they are 99.9999% reliable it still means they have a handful a year that fail. In the unlikely event the Boveda did fail, you should see something on the packet like a water stain or salt residue. Boveda uses water and different salts in solution so there would be a whitish residue when dry. That’s why they say you know when the Boveda needs to be replaced when it is hard and not pliable.
