BERLIN (Reuters) - A German man who unsuccessfully tried to kill himself by jumping in front of a train must pay compensation for the damage he caused, a court in the southern city of Munich ruled Tuesday.

A spokesman for the court said the 47-year-old man leapt too late to land under the train and instead crashed through the side window of the driver's cabin. He suffered head wounds but no other lasting physical injuries, the court said.

The driver of the metro train suffered shock and was unable to work for several weeks.

"Although the man was not guilty of a crime, there is a rule in the civil code which means that for reasons of equity, he had to pay for part of the damage," the spokesman said.

For repairs to the train and lost wages for the driver, Munich municipal authorities sued for damages of some 4,200 euros ($5,325). The court ordered the man to pay half the sum.
So, the question is: Would you Try again, or deal with whatever drove you to try suicide?

I would personally, try a more time proven method, like a noose after this.

Ummmmm...yeah.

I've never even semi-seriously considered the subject, but if I were to...it'd be something fast, sure and as painless as possible. Like a bullet to the head.
Hopefully the guy comes to terms with whatever made him believe things were so bad he had to check out prematurely.

I have seen suicide both train and hanging done successfully. I even had to pronounce the guy deceased to the cops while still swinging from a tree in his own backyard. Hanging was the most graffic and made for the worst lasting impression in my mind. GSW (gunshot wound) are more messy cause most of the body and blood stays together. The train usually drags pieces and parts and the torso for a quarter mile (or more). Trust me, neither is a good way to go. Someone must be really mentally off or very weak a person to even think of taking one's own life. Run away from issues/problems leaves a world of a mess for the loved one's that remain.

Ok then, who wants to smoke a cigar and have a beer ?

I hope he sees this as a 2nd chance....fate as you will.

But, me personally, I would do the bullet route if I was in that state of depression and was serious.

I have always seen suicide as a weak way to go. You are showing everyone that you are weak, and can't deal with a problem. Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger, and if you fail you must try again with a more determined attitude.

I actually feel for the conductor that had to see this right before his eyes. No matter what, that whole event is gonna haunt you for the rest of your life.

And lastly, a good beer and cigar sound nice. But first I will declare what I can't yell out at the office "I am sick of this place and everyone in here, specially the boss, So Long Jerkwads, see you all tomorrow"

Hmmm, never even crossed my mind as a serious alternative to dealing with problems. Not a serious alternative anyway. You know, typical teen agnst of "Why was I born" was about it. I really feel a bit of pity for those that do. What a dark spot you must be in to consider that.

Committing suicide is a very weak way to go and just shows everyone that you'd rather take the easy way out. I hope I'm never at that stage and life and sure don't ever want to be. But I'd probably do pills...

I never understood suicide. You are probably killing yourself cause you suck at doing something. Now you fail at suicide and that is it?

Why end your life, when you can stay around and make everyone elses life hell.

If you fail the first time, it was just not meant to be. You mind as solve your problem and move on.

If this guy felt like a failure before the jump I guess he is really depressed now.

I have never concidered scuicide as a solution to life's promblems. If things are that bad, maybe you should concider HOMICIDE.

I'd rather take out the people making my life hell.

Hmmmm......am I a maniac, or am I just tired of hearing of people saying, "he was a bully."

We recently had an internal medicine resident commit suicide. He was a great guy and we were all shocked. He did it right the first time, painless. He was found in his garage with his motorcycle on. What a freakin waste.

Seen this one also, very clean way to go. Fall asleep and die painlessly. Almost killed the neighbors cause was in a townhouse and the gas went next door into the night while they were sleeping. We had to take the neighbor to the hospital for CO poisoning. That is just stupid and inconsiderate.

I do not look at suicide attempts as a sign of weakness.

It has more to do with a feeling of hoplessness or despair. More often than not it is triggered by a real or percieved way that this is the only way to solve the problems you have caused or feel you have caused.

Having had family members that were sucsessful in thier attempts I have seen first hand what a person's family goes thru. It is much harder on the family they leave behind but somehow they feel that the people they love will be much better off without them.

The people that talk of suicide are not the people that statistcaly dont do it. The people that are serious about it just do it.

I can appreciate that John. I am sure it is very tough on the family. I don't think I could ever comprehend what a person is thinking/feelig when they are seriously considering suicide.

I can't even imagine what that would do to a family. I do agree that people that commit suicide are so desperate that their logic is skewed. I have to agree with the people who talk about it issue. I see those teenage girls that come in to the ER after taking 12 Prozac with "suicide attempts". When someone wants to off themselves most of the time they just do it.
