my friend is going to Dominican Republic and I am going to send some of my money with him.

Where should I tell him to go and what should I have him pick me up?

Tell him to only buy from a reputable shop. There should be some in the tourist areas. Is he going to a resort? From what I heard there probably won't be any deals if thats what you're thinking. Unless of course, your friend buys fake cigars off the street and you probably don't want those.

If he can get to the Davidoff factory there is supposed to be a store there. Apparently they have 'Kelner' cigars which are only available on the island. A very nice, rare treat, indeed.

I have a friend who is from the DR. Every year she brings me back some smokes from her visit home. Dominican tobacco is fantastic. She usually asks her local friends were the good stuff is at. I usually end up with some sweet local brands. Stuff you won't see in a store, but should be imho.

I woul0d not ask her to buy any OPUS stuff. I have heard form several that almost every Opus made is for Export, the rest are for charity auction. I could be wrong, but it would lend itself to be a highly counterfeited cigar given the location.

Thanks for all of the info. I really like the idea of those Davidoff's.

I did talk to him already about the counterfeits and that he is to only buy cigars at a retailer.

Where in DR is your friend headed?

Most of the hotels in the resort compound in Puerto Plata sell legitimate cigars in their bars/restaurants.

Just outside the resort compound is a quaint little place called Cafe Cito. Literally a hole in the wall restaurant/bar. They have a delicious house brand, rolled in their own "factory." I bought a mazo of 20 churchills for just over $45 USD.

Tell your friend to be very careful in his selections. Not all of the shopkeeps are honest, and not all of their product is legit. The last thing you want is a box of rolled banana leaves with a Cohiba label.
