Where's Dan?

I've got some sort of horrifying flying mutant beetle flapping around my deck. I'll try to get a picture.

Rats, it escaped before my wife could get the camera. It was a big buzzing flying beetle. Flew around banging and veering like a hummingbird with bad navigation.

Nature freaks out.

Wow, good call. Just googled some pictures. I think it was a june bug.

Despite most of us puffing away on cigars, June bugs always manage to crash my poker games!

:rofl: Well I was asleep when you posted that. Was probably what are commonly called June bugs. They belong to the family Scarabaeidae which also includes Dung Beetles (some of my favorites!) and Scarab Beetles (from whence the family name comes). While not the largest beetles, they do get big enough to alarm some people and can certainly make a painful impression during an ungraceful landing on your head. They also make quite the noise while flying and sound bigger than they are. A couple of weeks ago I had a massive infestation of the green June beetles in our yard. There were a good 2-3 dozen flying around and Lily (my little Dachshund mix) was running around frantically trying to kill every last one of them :laugh:.

That would have been my guess as well. We tie thread around them (about 5') and then attach to our kids finger like a baloon. It flies all over the place and the kids get a kick out of it. After the fun we set it free!
