This is a question to all photographers on here I have been trading texting with Brooks to get his opinion since he is the only professional I know in this field and I needed his new addy :timebomb:. My wife and I are lookiong for a new digital camera. We are going to keep our 3 year old Sony Cybershot because it is great for quick point and shoot situations, but we are alos looking for a dSLR style camera for vacations and trips we take.

We would like to stay under $500 if possible.

I am really leaning toward the: Nikon D3000

If you can spring for the extra cha-ching, Don, the Canon T1i is a great camera, and is routinely around $700 right now. Maybe a boxing day sale will pop up on one?

I'm a pro too... And shoot Nikon... Honestly, on the consumer level both have some nice options. Be aware that the lower level nikons don't take certain lenses.

I am hoping to find a new SLR under my tree this year. I really need to upgrade the photos I'm taking. I use a waterproof digital, and it's great, but pretty limiting as far as photo quality goes.

Ah, shit, who let this guy in here. I'm thinking your name would more aptly be "Mr. Incredible", Mr. Snider. hehe.

Figured out who I am yet? You should. We've cruised together...

Canon is the best camera engineers have designed for photographer's. Nikon is the best camera photographer's have designed for photographer's.

Been using both and both are good, but I prefer the handling and build on Nikon's.

What's up Chris?

Good to see you on here. When are we doing our next Cruise?

You'll have to come down and see me and crazy Amy soon...

I am really leaning toward the Nikon D3000, but I have one question, my wife doesn't fell comfortable using a manual focus, so does it have an auto ficus option for her to use. I want a manual focus and zoom, but I don't want to sleep in the man's room for the next month or so.

I don't have the D3000 (I use Canon equip) but yes it has auto focus. Tell your wife that you can put the camera in full-auto mode and just point, zoom, and shoot--the camera will take care of the rest. Even in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use an SLR camera, a modern DSLR in auto mode will take better pictures than almost any typical point-&-shoot camera.

The canon lens's with IS (image stabilization) is really sweet. Love them things.. lets you take great shots while moving and such with no camera shake.

I'm thinking about getting the wife a Canon Xsi. She likes my D10 but wants something a tad smaller. I have always had good results with Canon.
