I am looking to take my family on vacation to the Cancun area (a little south of) and stay in a resort...we were also going to go to the Playa Del Carmen to shop (and I want to go to LCDH) and see the Maya Ruins (Chitzen Itza)...we have made reservations. I am a bit concerned because I keep hearing of all the corruption, violent crimes, and kidnappings there (because I am taking 2 small children)...I want to hear from people that have been there recently what they thought. I have never been to Mexico...

We went to Playa Del Carmen the last two years with our 3 kids (6yr,4yr,2yr) and had a great time. We rented a condo in Playacar phase I. Ate in restaurants in Playa, walked around a lot in Playa and felt very safe. Your kids will love it there. Most of the drug war stuff is in the north of the country. Quintana Roo is a very secure area and the government has a large police and military presence. Don't hesitate at all to go.

most of the crime is related to drugs, so if you stay away from drug dealers and like you should be safe. I am going to Acapulco this july, and they have been a little more crazier than usual but I'm sure I'll be safe. Just follow the usual rules of travel and you should be safe. Cancun and Playa are excellent places to go and are probably the safest in all of Mexico. Mazatlan would be the most sketchy right about now since it is the Sinaloa cartel stirring up all the trouble. But I have been to all the resort areas in the last 5 years and never had a single problem.

The place we are going and staying is called Barceló Maya Colonial Beach...looks like it is in Xpu-Ha right by Puerto Aventuras...I guess that isn't Cancun...not sure if that is better or worse.

Xel-Ha. I've heard that's nice there. Good beach for kids. The whole Mayan Riviera area is safe. Especially if you are staying in a resort and taking organized tours, you don't have anything to worry about.

Totally over blown. I stayed at the hotel the blew up a while back, and not only would I go back to the area, I would even consider going back to that resort. Yes there is violence in Mexico, but is isolated to the north. As long as you stay in the relatively tourist areas you should be fine.

You'll be fine where you are going. I would not rent a car and take the family on a scenic drive through the jungle, by yourself. But take group tours from your hotel, and you'll be fine. Chitzen itza is friggin amazing if you are in to Historical stuff, Xel-ha or ixtapa are awesome family day trips with more to do than you can get done in one day. The people on the YUcata Peninsula are extremely tourist friendly and most speak English as well as we do.

HAve fun

I have a buddy who just moved to Cancun last month and he says he feels totally safe. He lives about a five to ten minute cab ride from the beach and all the major resorts and says it's business as usual. You are a family man so you your activities after sundown will be on or very near your hotel anyway so I think you'll be just fine. Enjoy yourself.

I have been to that area of Mexico about 8 or 9 times. I have never not felt safe. Playa Del Carmen is ok place to shop just stick to the main drag to find the best shops. As far as Chitzen Itza I say it is a waste of a day and money. You do get to see the ruins but you kill a entire day of vacation, it is a huge tourist trap and the goal is to get you there, show you the ruins and give you 4 hours to shop their market. If I was to do it again I would rent a car and drive there so we could leave on our time table. Xel-Ha as mentioned earlier is really cool and would be great for a family. Hope you have fun we go back in October.

Two folks at one of the plants I supply were killed yesterday (St. Luis).

If that tells you anything.

My parent were just there in playa del carmen (riviera maya) this last november, and theyre still alive. They did one of the excursions, not sure if it was chitzen itza or tulum, but they were fine. As stated above, stay in touristy areas with big groups, and stay away from glass tops! :waving:

Oh and by the way, we went to the ruins at Coba instead. We went because you can still climb to the top of that one. Just a thought.
I climbed to the top of chirten itza and laid on the altar where human sacrifices were done. I'll ask mom if she can find the pics.

Dude.... About a month ago, I was more or less exactly where you're going. Well, we went to Cozumel, which is the island just off of Playa Del Carmen, but we did spend a lot of time in the Playa, and in Mexico.

First of all, Yes, you can climb the temple at Chicen Itza (we went there, there are some places that are roped off, but the majority are free game... You can even climb around the Ball courts. It's really cool). If you go to Chichen Itza, make sure you have a tour guide, those guys are amazing, and the background knowledge makes seeing the place that much more interesting.

There are some areas of mexico that are pretty... Squallid... But the Playa area is a completely safe tourist trap. Awesome street performers, cool stores, there's even a starbucks somewhere near Cozumel (walking distance).

If you can, I'd say to go to Cozumel (Stay in the Hotel Cozumel, it's a fantastic place with a private beach, scuba lessons, a nice pool if you want to stay in, and a great bar) The LCDH (which is part of a HUGE strip of stores that your wife will spend days at) is walking distance from the Hotel Cozumel. If you don't stay on the Island, then you'll have to take a Ferry to playa, and the LCDH is directly across from where the ferry docks, it'll be the first thing you see.

Do some research and make sure you know where you're staying, but the vast majority of that area is perfectly safe (as long as you don't spend too much. It can be dangerous for those lacking willpower; like myself) But if you stay in the area of Cozumel, Play del Carmen, LCDH, etc, you will never lack for things to do, and you will be nice and safe.

MAKE SURE YOU LOOK UP HOW TO SPOT FAKE CUBANS. Just do it again to be sure.

And don't buy anything that isn't from LCDH. Even if you can spot a fake... Just don't risk it.

Those were from personal experience and may not apply to you.

Ya , I was there in Chichen Itza in 1986 and there were no restrictions about what you could do. Glad I saw it then.

I recently came back from Tulum, which is a little south of PDC. I never once felt uneasy about crime/kidnappings/violence etc. If you're going with family and stick to the more crowded spots you should be just fine. Of course, I wouldn't travel with anything in the way of flashy jewelry or anything like that though. Why push things??
