I have been wondering about the feasibility of converting a wine cabinet into a humidor for some time. I am talking about the wood cabinets like a Vinotemp Economy series and not the fridge type units. I'm open to different brands of the same style as I see these on Craigslist for very reasonable prices.
I don't plan to use the cooling feature as I'm assuming it has a similar effect on the interior environment as the compressor type cooling unit of the wine fridges.
The questions I have for anyone that has a wine cabinet like this or has access to one is in regards to the interior. Are the interiors bare wood or are they some sort of sealed wood? I guess it could be possible that they have a wood grain veneer of some sort. Also, in the ones that have the wood wine racking in them, is the racking easily removable?
I'm trying to determine if the unit can be used as is without the need to line the interior of the unit with Spanish cedar.
Also, is the seal of the unit fairly tight? I know that there has to be some ventilation for the cooling unit, but does that unit block the interior and exterior air exchange?
If anyone has any input on this I would greatly appreciate it as it would be nice to be able to perform a cheap conversion for a large amount of space.
Creating a drawer/shelf system would be the next challenge, but I think that's an easier issue to solve.
