So I got a Wireless PC card to hook up to my wireless router at home and I can't get it to recieve information from the wireless router. it will attempt to send information out but none coming in.

It's set up correctly and I don't know how to make it work. It's the correct card as far as I know. Could it be from when I reformatted my computer that I screwed up my network with my roommates and the internet or something?d

Go to your "start" button

Select "run" then type "cmd"

when the window pops up type "ipconfig /release"

once its done type "ipconfig /renew"

see if that works (and type those without the quotes)

"run" isn't under my start menu. Is there any other way to get to it?
try:
"Start" button
"Programs"
"Accessories"
"Command Prompt"

then follow Larry's release instructions

BTW - What version of Windows?

alright...I'm going to explain this in two posts.

1) I did all of that and still no receiving of packets to the card. I put in the card and tried to reconfig the ip and it timed out.
2) I kept the card in and plugged my computer up to the Ethernet line then reconfiged again. This time it brought up 4 things for the Local Area connection as well as 4 things for the Wierless Network connection.

Ethernet adapter Local Area connection:
a)Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : "there's type here"
b)IP Adress . . . . . . . . : "my ip address is here"
c)Subnet Mask . . . . . . . : "numbers are here"
d)Default Gateway . . . . . . : "numbers are here:

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
a)Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : "nothing is here"
b)Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : "a different IP Address is here"
c)Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : "bit diff. # here than subnet above"
d)Default Gateway . . . . . . : "nothing is here"

That's the first thing. Next.

I clicked on the Wireless Network Connection Status at the bottom right. Then looked at the support tab.

Limited or no connectivity
"You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. this problem occurred because network did not assign a network address to the computer.

Now when I look at what it says my network is it says: SoftGate-THE-BIG-O

this is why I'm thinking that it's simply that when I reformatted I put a different network name on the computer and that's screwing it up. but then again the Local Area connection is working. I dunno.

your router should assign you an ip, it will probably be something like 192.168.1.100 or 101 or 102 or something like that. Its pretty much the same for everyone.

bigO, after the restart try the ipconfig again. your ip to the wireless should start with 192.168.

If your IP starts with 169.x.x.x you don't have a connection. Make sure your wireless doesn't have MAC address filtering turned on.

Alright! Woohoo! Got it working. All I had to do was go into a program that came with the card and change the setting of the card from AP Mode to Station Mode.

All working now. Now I can lay in my bed and do this crap, H2O yeah.
