Every once in a while, I light a cigar and about half way through, the wrapper come off and the cigar swells up by about 30%. My humidity is good and they are in the newair fridge at 65 degrees. This happened a lot during winter, but I expect that, but it happened again today and I am totally lost for an explanation. Any ideas?

The difference between cigar humidity and humidity outdoors, you can try dry boxing a rotation of cigars before you smoke them or even easier, slow down on the puffs, I'd bet a nickle you hit the cigar pretty fast, slowing down a bit will help with them exploding. but that's only my experience.

All of my cigars are maduro wrapper, I just can't smoke lighter wrappers. I did puff this one cause I was trying to squeeze a cigar in before I left the woods. It just seems to be happening too many times for me and it's always on a really good cigar, which ticks me off.....

30%? That is a lot… heck 10% is too much.

Two quick comments:

1) Excess humidity interior to the cigar's bunch is definitely an issue.

2) Likely a poorly selected binder leaf, no binder should allow a cigar to expand this much.

3) Inadequate time in the mold being pressed is another likely issue at hand.

Also don't take the band off until you absolutely have to. The band will help to keep the wrapper intact....that Info coming from Nick Perdomo in a video on YouTube.

Um… didn't see the video, but I am sure this wasn't what Nick was implying… leaving the band on helps to prevent -you- from tearing wrapper as some times some of the band adhesive sticks the ring to the cigar, but leaving the cigar ring on will not do anything to prevent a wrapper failure for the reasons I mentioned.

Steve I went back and rewatched--I get what you are saying now. I misunderstood what Nick was saying and thought he meant that the band helped keep the cigar from swelling too much.

o and I had a cigar lastnight, spent some time paying attention to how fast I was going and all was good. I was helping my son spread lime in the yards and the cigar was fine till he started going a little faster and I puffed more and ..... Kaboom, it exploded. Mental note, slow down and enjoy cigar:)

Had the Same thing when I started smoking cigars a couple of years ago.

I tried plating around with the humidity levels but it made no difference.
So u took the time to learn and Appreciate the cigar more. Not rushing it by puffing too much... And this solved the problem here as Well.
After a while you develop a kind of 6th sence and you ni longer need to Pay that much attention to you smoke-behaviour :)

Wrappers tend to split esp. when they are thin and we have to be careful in how they are being stored. If the RH is too high in their storage this just adds to the problem. I tend to choose a maduro because for me they smoke better and tastier and I rarely deal with splitting wrappers. Most enthusiasts will store their cigars in a 65% climate which again helps to prevent these issues. As said some will puff too much and then when you put all of these things together you have a recipe for things going wrong. What I didn't read from the thread is how long the cigars were in their humidor...just because the RH was right inside doesn't mean they were in there long enough...kind of like wanting to freeze ice cubes...it takes time for them to become an ice cube. I'd say a good 30 days in any humidor is a good start.

I had a couple over the weekend and all was good, I also only smoke Maduro and I keep both the winedors at 65% and 65 degrees. I guess I need to slow down a bit and enjoy them more. I just need the time to do that....
