I had been hearing about these cigars, forever, mainly because I listen to Dogwatch Cigar Radio, which is sponsored by Esencia Cigars. Besides just from the Dogwatch crew, I had heard some rave reviews about the cigars. So, never having had one, I posted it as a wish back when Bob started the Make A Wish II thread. Dookie was kind enough to fulfill with one.

Last week, I sat down to enjoy it, and started taking notes for a review. It started out fairly tasty, but somewhere before the 2nd third, it just turned not so good. It was a bit of charred wood notes in it... but just flat out got bitter, harsh... I couldn't smoke it any further, and that's why I didn't post my review. I was really disappointed, because I was looking forward to finally enjoying this cigar.

Now, to my question... What has been everyone else's experience with Esencia cigars? Have they always been great for you? Have you had any issue similar to mine?

I would love to hear your input, to see if it was just the one I had... or just me, or what. I appreciate it, guys!

I was gifted one earlier this year. Let it sit in my wineador @ 65/ 67 for nearly 3 months before I smoked it. My experience was similar. The first third was pleasant and looked like it could be a solid smoke. It quickly made a turn and tasted a bit stale and it wasn't long before I had to put it down. This was my only stick so I hate to put it out there but since you asked ..... I have had this happen to me wit some of my go-to sticks too. I'll defiantly give them a second look due to the fact that I enjoyed the first third and I hear good things from this line.

I had a couple CGs last year that were really good, no bitter turn at all. I have a lancero that I have yet to try.

Hate to hear that it was harsh. I got those in Aug 2010 and have kept them in the wineadore at 68 deg and 65% since I got them. I have to admit I only smoked one of them so far and it was at the last MS Herf we had after a day of smoking and drinking some adult beverages. I may have to send you an "I'm sorry your wishlist cigar sucked" package :halfgrinw

Ive had one and it was good but it had that very dry Nica profile to me that Brickhouses and Curivaris have. And Im just not a huge fan of that profile.

I've had several of these and even gifted them. They all smoked great! Last one I had was like 4 months ago.

Love the Esencia...especially the CGs. Never had a bad one. The boxes have the actual year they were rolled, right on the front. However, the tobacco is the exact same.

So 2009 cigars have the same tobacco as the 2008 ones, only rolled at different times.

I am personally a huge fan of these cigars. I have had the Corona Gorda, Lancero, Canonazo and my favorite the Robusto. I would put these cigars in my "top of the heap" catagory. I love the flavors from the first puff until I nub them.
The best part of Esencia/Palio is the people behind the products. Every retailer of their cigars does not ship to Canada, so getting them up here has been a pain, but Marc helped me get a sampler before I bought a bundle of them and didn't like the profile. I was so impressed with their customer service and care in such a short time.

I'm guessing I just had an exception to the norm. I will have to give these a try, again. Thanks for all your input, guys!! I appreciate it.

Easily one of my favorite NC cigars, they are a great change of pace. Wish some on the B&Ms near me carried them.

Yes at a few places. I know 2guyssmokeshop has em, but they are rather pricey there....I don't get that company; they brag about no tax over the border from Mass, but their prices are so much higher than everyone on most of their stuff...

I smoked one about a week ago, based on other peoples great reviews, I as well was disappointed in it. Started out just ok, but never developed, if anything it went downhill. I felt as if I was just smoking a big cigarette. Maybe I need to give another a try based on everyone else here has said.
