I know Matt Booth of Room 101 is fascinated with Japan. I presume the same about Farkas.

Fat Man and Little Boy are a whole other discussion, which we've already had once. Funny how no one has said anything about 601 La Bomba with names like "Nuclear" and "Atom."

In the end — Jim is right, it's marketing and it's fun for those involved.

Let's me remember, cigar packaging was something that really got started by placing pictures of women on the boxes to sell the product, so at least if we are going to complain about being insensitive or offensive to some — we have a long history of it. lol.

I think there are various levels of marketing. There's the over the top stuff and there is more refined, subtle marketing tactics. i.e. If considering buying a box of cigars and one is wrapped in ribbon with an elegant box and the other is wrapper in plastic with an unattractive box, which would you lean towards? Presentation does matter to a lot of people, there is just extremes.

For the record, I myself would ask my B&M for a stick of each, spend the afternoon smoking them in the lounge, then make my decision. But a lot of people would buy based on the eye candy.

The bottom line is that they sell. The marketing, subtle or not, is working. I feel people forget that this is a business, and to stay in business, you kind of need profit. If the Asian theme is working for one company, you can bet you will see another company copy it.

The Monster series and Skull & Bones are a great example. There wasn't any, to my limited knowledge, Halloween themed cigars released during October, now we have two companies doing it. The marketing worked for one, then the other followed suite. I wouldn't be surprised if more and more start popping up.

This has been coming up more and more. The Asian stuff and the bomb-inspired/Spike TV style marketing does not appeal to me. I like classic presentation.

That said, I'll cop to the fact that classic presentation is marketing as well and has nothing to do with substance. The fact that Pete Johnson's cigars have simple, thin, Cuban-inspired bands is one of the reasons I smoke them. I like the ribbon in his boxes and the fact that they are cabinet-style (many of them). Nothing wrong with marketing as it heightens the experience of smoking the cigar for many of us.

I smoke what I like to smoke period. I could care less what it's called or what the box looks like. I do smoke at least two of every new release, again regardless of what it's called from the manufacturers that I enjoy regularly. I also try other new releases based on reviews I find here.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of respect for Tatuaje, and the respect Pete shows for Cuban heritage and influence, but while he does use SLBs and Dress boxes with classic style to them, he also does plenty of spike TV tattoos and heavy metal marketing of his own.

That said, I don't hate the tattoos and UFC marketing, I just think there is something to be said for understated, classic, simplicity.

I like the marketing geared towards a modern and younger crowd within limits. I can't think of anything really over the top that bothers me or turns me away from a cigar. The guys saying they just want a good quality cigar have a point too. You can dress a turd up with a pretty box but in the end it is still just a turd.

I would quit the hobby the day that happens!
I'm not a fan of all the Japanese or Asian marketing ploys to be honest. To me, that culture has little to nothing to do with cigars.
But like others have said, it's a new "hip" thing to do.
I ,,, don't get your point by bunching Japanese and Asian culture, Indonesian Indian Filipino tobacco are fully or subsidiary in cigars you smoke daily, and Indonesian cigars are rock hard popular in Europe and Asia. Still just a few known in the US or has faded out but they have a very long tradition with cigars almost equal to the length of Cuban history as a whole country .

Japan has the Kizami (thin sliced natural tobacco as if in Latakia tobacco from Syria)tobacco manufacturers for pipes still manufacturing and a single cigar brand manufactured in the whole history , but nothing else .

I personally don't get the Samurai with a Shuriken thing:ninja:

You don’t get my bunching Japan with other Asian countries or you don’t get me saying they have little to do with cigars?

Even with what you have typed, I still feel (I’m my mind) that the Japanese culture has little to do with cigars.

Yap , the question was why the Japanese words on cigars and accessories lately if they have little to do with cigars (cutlery maybe).
Asian tobacco culture is kinda off topic I guess since W.Churchill JFK and etc loved smoking Filipino and Indonesian cigars (correct me if I'm wrong )and since some how faded away in the US market today.
