I would love to work in a shop even if it is just a couple days a week. I love being in the enviroment and learning more about the cigar culture. Seems around here the only way that would happen is if you're life long friends with the owner. Maybe I just need to open one.

Yeah I'm looking into opening a lounge in town in the downtown its growing and we are in lack of one, but we have a cigar shop that's been here for 45 years so I know there's a scence for it here.

High risk, high rewards!
The shop has been my most fun job yet, no surprise.

I think we all have the dream of owning our own shop. If I could only win the Powerball I could make it happen.

Ditto
Me to bro, I was also going to do woodworking have all the tools but physically doesn't seem possible. maybe when I am retired I'll offer my time for free for awhile and if I work out then later they can pay me a little bit for food and utilities anyway. :smokingme

A person has to have something to do in retirement to keep them going, So lets hope wherever I end up has some cool shops as I doubt I would invest my life savings and then have to work 80 hour weeks to make it work. like trading one stressful situation for another and risking all my money.

PS
:nono: I did consider it for a little bit but am to old to lose. :gangfire:

I started out working part time evenings and weekends in a shop a year and a half ago and turned it in to a career recently. Was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It's not all fun and games just like every job, but I get up every morning now and don't dread going to work like I had in the past. Plus to do something you have a passion for is huge for me.

Seems around here the only way that would happen is if you're life long friends with the owner.
just like any neighborhood business, the more they know about you, and the more you know about them, the easier it is to suit you up. you want it, LET THEM KNOW. if you are a patron, know patrons and employees, and are in good standing, it can't hurt to ask.
if you want part time, let them know EXACTLY what you can and can't do, and give them a little flexibility. makes it easier for you both to see if it will work out.
and you WILL go broke. you just will. if you post on this board, if you work in premium cigars, it is like a fat kid at wonkaland! srsly, ever see a skinny oompa loompa?

Yeah I'm going to talk to the owner of the shop here about starting a lounge downtown and seeing if he wanted to be a vendor in the lounge. I guess ill see how it goes tomorrow.

I work in a neighborhood b&m, I was a long time patron before working here. As a college student it's the best part time job I could ever imagine. Definitely a great experience!

It would really be great to work in a place you love and another thing that is good is that you're employed unlike many other people around the world. There are millions of young men and women waiting and waiting for job opportunities. This chronic problem of unemployment is not confirmed to any particular class, segment or society. I've read some articles that talks about unemployment, please allow me to share it here. about 3,000 careers. Citigroup is the biggest financial institution announcing layoffs this week. But it is in no way the only one. The financial institution states the move is a cost-reducing strategy. Layoffs are being experienced in the monetary market in the United States and abroad. Source for this article: Citigroup could lay off thousands in continued industry turmoile . The problem of unemployment is a world-wide reality. The developed countries like the U.S., England, France, Germany, Italy, etc. also suffer from this problem, see it's all over.

Couldn't have said it better myself! After being a Federal customer and hanging out with Speedy for 8-9 months when he worked, I have now been promoted to part-time help. It's a dream gig to be paid to assist others in something I enjoy so much.

Ian, I cannot wait to have you assist me in finding an enjoyable smoke. BTW, I've already tried the PCR :hysterica

I recently left my job as an employee at the cigar shop here in OKC. It was a fun job, smoking was considerably cheaper, you get dibs on new cigars, your in the loop. Plus you learn a lot about the business side of tobacco, not just the smoking side. All in all, if you are going to start your own shop you need to have someone on your staff who as worked in a shop before preferably managed one, to really get you squared away.

We are taxed on EVERYTHING tobacco, and you have to know your taxes, make sure they are filed correctly.
You have to know the companies and vendors of the cigar world to let them know you are opening and to come and set up accounts and things like that.

It really is a lot of work, but if it is done right the reward can be really good. I worked at another cigar shop before I worked at the last one, and they were making 150-200% mark up on all their singles.

Hope this helps.

HA! That will be a good time :). I'm working in Plaistow on Sundays, in fact my first day at that location will be the NE Herf. I still plan on hanging Thursdays in Epping if I can make it out of the house on time.

Short Run 2011 is coming....

I agree with Craig wholeheartedly, but not everyone is cut out for "retail" work.

Believe me when I tell you that "the customer is NOT always right but they are always the customer!"

Thanks for the good info. I'm actually starting to become a "hang around" at a smaller shop where I live and just hoping to learn all that I can. Then maybe after a while and the owner and I build that trust I can get a foot in the door.

Perhaps this may be of interest: our nation's oldest cigar shop is available for sale. It closed this year, after the two partners who owned it both passed away. It's Demuth's Tobacco Shop, in Lancaster, PA, founded in 1770. It's a very quaint space, with beautifully-restored, built-in humidors lining the walls. The building is owned by The DeMuth Foundation; if you're interested, you'd need to talk to them.
