Hi guys (and gals),

I live in a suburb of chicago. I'm a complete noob when it comes to cigars. I just got my first humidor a week ago. Purchased from CI. Then I learned about cigarbid....I've spent way too much times....and money...on that site.

I have a confession to make. One of the motivators for me signing up is I have a issue I need your help with. One of the cigars I ordered (rocky patel signature toro) has a very suspicious spot on it. I'm guessing it's mold but i'm not sure because it's not fuzzy. It's a greenish blue discoloration of the leaf. I would post a pic but I don't think i'm allowed yet. I'll probably just toss it to be on the safe side but any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

I tried posting a picture but i keep getting "error_nourlallowed". I use photobucket which might be the problem. so i'll try making an album.
Edit: So it seems to freak out when ever I try posting with any url, even from quoted text. But there are pictures up in an album. I'll see if i can sort out the url issue.

The suspect spot is just above the band in the middle of the cigar.

Most of my experience with cigars has been mooching from friends around holiday times. I know. Anyway I had this very tasty montecristo while in the caymans in august. Sadly I lost the band so I don't remember what stick it was. The shopping season has convinced me to part ways some cash and I though I would give this hobby a try.

I'm a software developer and I live in Oak Park, which is just west of chicago.

Welcome from LaSalle county IL bro! I looked at the pic you put up and that does not look like a sunspot or anything to me. (I however am no expert) Also I know you got a humidor, but what are you using for humidification. I strongly recommend getting 'beads' from http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/default.asp
Anyway I know you can get better deals online on your sticks, but since your totally new to the game and in the city you may want to look up some Brick and Mortar stores near your area. If you find a good one they can really help you out as well. In fact I believe there are Chicagoland B&M owners/regulars on this board who could recommend you a place.

Nothing wrong with that stick. Just discoloration in the leaf.
My advise is to stick around here and don't waste too much money on CI/CBID stuff. It's a slippery slope. Before you know it you'll have 2 humidors filled with crap that you can't give away as your palette developes. No knock on the stuff your smoking now. If you enjoy it then by all means smoke it.

I got them online because I was learning how to set every thing up properly. And I thought, what the heck, why not. Also that site of evilness lured me in...

The spot was there right out of the box. But for my humidor i'm using the cheap, made in china, humidifier that came with it. It looks like it's just a sponge in side. which is keeping my humidor a little too humid for my liking. I'll defnitely have to look into beads.

The other cigars I got with that order (a couple of samplers) all look clean. So i'm not too worried and if i have to toss it. Oh well. Not a big deal.

The humidor itself seems to be working like a champ. it's desktop 100count box.

@USCG Cigar Newb I envy you. The caribbean is amazing. I love diving down there. Also it's bitter cold here and snowing...But not the powdery/fun snow. The frozen snow of misery.

Welcome from Chicago's South Suburbs!! Chicagoland has a lot of nice B&M's!! As for the spot, could just be discoloration, could be mold. Could be nothing, could be everything.

Well that's part of the fun. I'm still figuring out what I like. So i got a couple of samplers to taste different styles and makers. specifically I got CI's Mild & Mellow #2 and Half Wizard w/ McTwist on cbid. I figured that would give me a good spread. But if you guys have any specific recommendations i'm all ears.

Welcome from balmy Austin, TX! Muahaha!

Sounds like a harmless "water spot". If I'm right, you'll see a lot of lighter-colored wrappers that have green spots or other blemishes from incomplete processing. I see this a lot on my delicious lil' bolivars. Doesn't mean they're not going to smoke well.

On the mild/medium side I would give Perdomo's lot 23 line a spin, Excalibur in either wrapper, and also the Brickhouse by JC Newman. Also the regular La Aurora Cameroon. As for other suggestions... you may want to try Escencia, Cain (I prefer the Maduro), Don Tomas Clasico, J Fuego Origen (the originals are nice), and Punch (the london club is a nice size).

Welcome from Chicago! I agree with the others on the board as it sounds like a blemish that wasn't rejected when they sorted the cigars during the Quality Control process.

I recommend reading the welcome pages that appear as a sticky in the Introduction section and perform a Newbie trade. A veteran will be assigned to you to perform a trade... it's a good way to get a variety of sticks to try and meet folks on the board.

hey! welcome to the fold from kentucky!

i say just smoke that stick, it looks cool from here. if it tastes off, THEN pitch it. you don't want that in your box long term, just in case, but worst case is it won't kill you, or make you sick. might sour the mood, but just replace with a better smoke.

and TRULY great collection of people here. ask, and you will get a straight answer 98% of the time. better odds than anywhere else on the web!
