also keep in mind that you will have less issues with a non cooled cabinet vs a cooled cabinet

what type of issues Ron? the biggest I can think of is condensation - how does that work in an Avallo? I know with my wine fridge I just have to be careful not to let the boxes touch the back wall where condensation occurs.

condensation issues as a whole will be less in an Avallo than a similar size wine fridge type.

but they are still there, that why Matt has to provide for drainage.

Performance also can depend on where you live. I dryer climate will give little to no troubel. those who live in humid areas will have more.

Bro... stop looking at companies like Avallo and Aristocrat for your humi if cost is the issue. Don't get me wrong... those guys make GREAT stuff! I have an Avallo Accumonitor system in my custom even.

You can do it for a LOT cheaper! Buy something at a yard sale, discount furniture store, whatever... that you want to convert into a humi. Line it with cedar and install cedar shelves (I'm NOT a handy guy - I PAID to have this done and it was NOT very expensive). Then install a cooling and humidification system...... or even start by purchasing a thermoelectric fridge to build your custom.

Anyway... I tell this to everyone who is cost conscious...... custom is CHEAPER and you get a unique cabinet that works just as well! I do NOTHING on my own (I mean that - nothing - I have people to do my dishes, laundry, yardwork, pool, house cleaning, etc...)...... and I had a gianormous custom cabinet made out of an antique foreign armoir with digital controls, glass inlays, removeable trays, adjustable shelves, etc... for WAY less than ANY of the Avallo or Aristocrat stuff you're looking at above.................. just takes more TIME, yes..... but time you have!

My .01 (usually not worth .02).

Great idea!!

I'd go Avallo, Aristocrat, etc. Doing it yourself you aren't going to save much in the end over just spending it in the beginning. Or go with a starndard uncooled cabinet and get a window A/C.

Or do Like Darkman and do a walkin with a indoor smoking room!

Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions.

I was almost sold on buying a cabinet without a cooling system and also buy a small portable air conditioner for when I need it in the Summer. I was just looking at a couple options on Costco.bomb and realized that I would not want to constantly run an A/C unit when I'm away from home multiple days! I usually go on vacation in July/August and there's no way I would just let an A/C unit run for 9 days while I'm gone. Whereas I can just set and forget a cabinet humi with A/C unit.

And just like any other major purchase I do... I think like a cheap ass when I start looking, then think oh I can spend a couple extra hundred for that, then the next day I think the same, then the next, and before you know it, I'm buying a top-notch quality thing.

Looks like I'm deciding between the Aristocrat M Plus or Mxt, or Avallo DDD with cooling units... or hire JFire when I buy a new house! :)

I'd go the avallo non cooled if it were me Ryan. Those small ac units have a thermostat you can set just like the controlled humis do. Doesn't matter if your gone for 10 days etc the ac unit is only going to run when it hits the "set" temp. And just because I'm nailing a few pieces of lumber together does not make me any sort of craftsman lol. Thanks for the laugh though!

As Jfire said, the window AC units (and even floor standing units) have thermostats... it's not On or Off, you actually pick a temperature and the unit does the rest. I would not worry about setting an AC unit to 70-72 F for the 9 days you are away from home.

Well after flip-flopping over the entire holidays, I just got off the phone with Bob and ordered my Aristocrat MxTHC! It's the 5' tall x 40" wide x 26.5" deep with the temp control. I stayed basic on the extras like crown molding etc, but I did upgrade to a Black Walnut finish.

I'm not sure I should be saying this... I know the great quality of Aristocrats, but now I can say I have the same humidor that's in the White House! We were talking and Bob let me know that he installed a cabinet humi in the White House about 5-6 years ago and is like the Mxt, but a little slimmer. Wow, that's pretty cool for Bob. But keep that more on the down-low as he said contractually he can't advertise or discuss publicly on his website or in advertisements, but can talk about it all he wants. I'm sure it's okay for me to say here, but I should've asked him first...

Congrats Ryan, you'll love your new piece of furniture. I've ordered from Bob several times and he's great to work with and a fine craftsman.

Enjoy your Aristocrat! I, too, was recently debating what humidor to purchase and received some varied, but great, advice. I had looked at the Aristocrat and the Avallo; however, I do not have the temperature issues that you have (I am assuming in Hawaii). I ended up purchasing a Cuban Crafters end table humidor that fits nicely in my home office. If I may impart some wisdom, go bigger than you want. You will certainly appreciate the extra room. Humidors, in the hands of cigar lovers, fill up quickly!

Here
Buy the unit and call it a day.

My house (and the wife knows it) is to maintain 65-70 degrees year round. There are no options.

When I build my walkin, it will have its own separate cooling system.
