Now that my man cave is finished I wanted to use the space under my basement stairs for a Humi cabnet. Nothing really big but enough to fit what I want. I figure it's the perfect spot and it'll go nicely over the small fridge that goes below.
My main question for you pro's is this...
I am having a friend who does cabnetry make the doors which will look something like this...
My questions is what wood should I use for the cabinet doors. I plan on staining them but want to make sure I use the right wood.
Is cherry a good choice?

Here are some pics I have taken along the way. Its face is 37x39 and 39 deep

I used Spanish cedar for my panels and Oak molding for the corner trim.

So what do you think..any suggestions?

Sorry I have no suggestions, not a "pro" in this area. Just wanted to say though that looks like a great idea, good luck, and I can not wait to see how it turns out.

just a caveat that you thought about the heat generated and vented by the fridge. i love the idea, and would hate to see you do this build only to gently roast your stash.

not gently roast your 'stache, either! HAVE TO make sure the torch is not set to "spot weld"!

and good luck with this build man, looks cool!

No worries on the heat from the fridge...it's a mini fridge with alot of circulation around it...so I'm not worried about that at all.
Just concerned about what wood to use.

Not an expert really, but here's my $0.02. I'm a fan of natural wood so I hate to see stuff like Cherry stained. As Cherry ages it darkens beautifully. Why not go with Maple? Or you could use Mahogany since it's got many of the characteristics of Spanish Cedar.

If I go with Cherry I won't stain it...I want a dark finish. The guy building it has alot of Cherry. I did mention Mahogany as well but he doesn't have any at the moment. If everyone thinks Mahogany is the best choice then I'll wait for him to get some. I have alot of time seeing how there leaving for Florida and this won't get done till after March. Hence me having time to get the right wood for the job.

He's probably a good friend worth the wait but I'm sure forest (the drawer guy) could turn out some cocabola stained door(s) with a certain routered inset for a piece of stained glass that u put in. For a reasonable price, in just a few weeks. Food for thought Tom.
Good luck brother!

I'm sure he could add the inset in for the tiling as well.

I second Mahogany. Gets your darker color profile you want, and is a nice hardwood that isn't too aromatic.
Good idea under the stairs. If my furnace wasn't right there, I might think of doing the same thing.

I would be inclined to use teak or mahogany. If only I had a space to do a build some day I hope.

Nice project Tom - have you thought of lighting, humidification and air circulation yet ?

You could add another sheet of ply under the side supports and drill holes in the current bottom sheet. A nice big tray of beads in the gap with 3 or 4 pc processor fans to draw air from the shelf with the beads in.

Most of this I have thought about but untill I can get the front built the other things must wait.
I have found a local contractor who does this kinda work and he should be out for an estimate within a week or so. I'll keep this updated as it goes.
