Iam checking a few 4star hotels and at least the booking sites I am checking thru the diffrence is about 100$ per night. And they have good reviews on Hotels.com.
Any input on these hotels?

*Luxor
*MGM
*Golden nugget
*Monte Carlo

Luxor is a dump. Lomg past its prime
MGM is OK. Depends ont he room and tower
Golden Nugget - Downtown and the best deal in town but far from the strip. We stayed here when relatives were staying their to be close. Upgraded the room for nothing and has great room.
Monte Carlo - OK

I looked at priceline, either they dont have any good deals starting from march 20th or I just cant find them. Venetian was about 180 per night wich is what it cost at all the places I have looked at, I think that will be the one....have to search some more.
Ben, when using Priceline, you don't simply use their search engine. That pricing is just like all the other website prices. You need to bid your own price... that's where you get the deals.

Go to their main page, then scroll down just a bit to the "Name your own price" section and click on the Hotels bid now button. You then simply put in your dates, the area of town you want, the star level and your price. You have to enter your credit card info before submitting and if they accept your price, you get a hotel room and then they tell you what hotel it is. I would recommend reading through the 2 websites below before you bid to learn how to bid the best. If your offer isn't accepted, you can add a section or star level to bid again, or wait 24 hours to rebid.

There are 2 websites that I use where people list their "wins" by date, price and star. That way you can search this list for anyone else that got a hotel around your same dates so you can see what prices are being accepted. The strategy with Priceline is you don't want to bid too high, so using these sites are great.

Here is the list of hotels you should expect to "win" by bidding your own price on Priceline. It's not a guaranteed list, but is usually correct.

The Las Vegas Strip Area zones include some hotels THAT ARE NOT ON THE STRIP.

^^^ On the above, stick to 5 stars IMO, at least on the Las Vegas Strip South... and instead of waiting 24 hours, just clear your cache after each bid.

I would want to avoid the risk of staying at Tropicana...

This is a good way to do it if you aren't too particular. I used to stay at Loew's Lake Las Vegas for $100 a night in the boom period. Of course, you have to like Lake Las Vegas for that to seem like a deal, and you need a car. But both of those suited me.

I will be in vegas march 1st through the 6th and will be staying at aria for 3 of the nights and then joining up with friends at NY/NY for the last two nights.

Never stayed at Aria but my friend has many times and says its very nice. For 3 nights I think it endes up beeing about $550

But they just painted the Tropicana the whitest white I've ever seen. I can damn near see it from my house.
New paint, same dirt.

By the way... if memory serves me correctly, I think that I used to be able to make out the Luxor light from around 60 miles out... it was faint then, but by 45 miles out it was pretty distinct. Too bad they had to turn it down.

Sorry bro, you're going during spring break. I went in May, sort of the 'off-season.' Thats why your rates are a little higher.

I also agree with checking 'www.biddingfortravel.com' to see what the latest successful bids have been during the time period you're going. That will give you a barometer as to what price is sticking for where and when you want to stay.

Regards,
Randy

Unless you plan on spending a lot of time in your room, probably better to stick to a lower priced room and save your money for other things. Even the 4 star places are nicer than most higher end hotels in most cities. Another place to check out is the rooms at MGM Signature or Palms Place, both are condos that are in the rental program for the hotel.

Wow. Thanks for that link Veeref. Looks like those bid sites are the way to go. We always stay at the Westin, which is a total dump, but right there on Flamingo, so walking distance to the middle of the Strip (about 2 blocks), and we stay almost for free, using points through Starwoods (somehow all of the men in my family have accumulated buckets of them...)... but it might be worth it to play with the bid sites next time we go, just to see what we can get at a 5 Star joint.

Also, congrats Ben. Even if you aren't a big gambler, or a nightclub person, there are plenty of cool things to see and do in Vegas. The dining is out of this world (Joel Robuchon, Keller's Bouchon, Guy Savoy... honestly, I could blow my savings on restaurants in Vegas, easily), just be prepared to pay.
