Book price increases?

I had a number of books saved to my favorites I planned to buy in the future. One would be the 38 volume collection of William Shakespears complete works. The price was $90.00 last I checked, was probably in the summer time. I was going to buy it now and the price is now $300.00! WOW! Several other books I had saved doubled or tripled in price as well... What the heck?

Now whats annoying about this is Amazon.com made prices so low they put out all the local book shops and even chain bookstores like Borders. And now that they run a monopoly on the industry, they now are charging more than the local businesses they put out of business with their low prices were charging.

I think, if you shop around, obviously, you can do better than Amazon. I never use Amazon unless I absolutely cannot find a book anywhere else.

Their customer service is poor, and it takes forever to get your purchase.

Wow. I have never had anything but exceptional service from Amazon and we use them a bunch.

Apparently the book was around $200 and dropped to $94.99 in December of 2006 only to be bumped back up to $200 in January 2007. I'd imagine that since I can't find it anywhere else that it's out of print making it more expensive.

Maybe it's a way of pushing more people to use kindle? Just a shot in the dark but things fluctuate on that site like crazy. I paid 18 bucks for a new video game that at certain times was 20 dollars more expensive and didn't include shipping. Your patience will be rewarded no matter which site you use. The bigger hurry you are to get something the more you have to pay for the item.

This just seems a bit odd.

If you order something from Amazon, it normally ships 3-5 days, a lot of times for free. I have Prime and out of 100+ orders in the past two years and all but two of them have showed up on time. The two that didn't, Amazon refunded me once for the item ($175) without asking and the other time was a few weeks ago during holiday shipping. UPS had the item and their driver took an extra day to deliver it.

If you order something through Amazon and one of its venders, it's much like eBay. I haven't had an issue in a while, but a few years ago when I had an issue with a vendor, it was much like eBay. Took me 21 days or something to get my money back and they shutdown the vendor a month later. It was a bit annoying, but didn't seem anything that would be unusual.

Could be that it's a recent reprint and the publisher has pulled old copies from vendors...

Kindle, Nook, PDF, etc ... seems like these eBook formats are the wave of the future. I do like the feel of a real book, but anything larger than a paperback gets rather unwieldy when trying to read in bed at night. And why buy tons of heavy books and bookshelves to store them when you can fit thousands of ebooks on a $25 thumb drive or SD card. In fact, if you want Shakespeare, here's a site (one of many) where you can download the ebooks for Free! http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/s/shakespeare/william/

If you really want physical books, I'd suggest shopping at used bookstores or Goodwill / Salvation Army or even your local libraries. I've purchased nearly new copies (even first editions) for 60-95% off of the list price.

I have a nook and agree about the weight and progress in a real book.... But the lineage of handing down a beautiful set of books to my son is better than pdfs.........

Yeah you don't get shakespear on PDF. haha. I would like a nice collection of his works though.

I waited a month for a textbook that I needed for a class, and I tried to make contact about the issue, and no one returned my messages...

I honestly have NO idea what this is about. Maybe someone figured out what the collection was really worth? Or just that Amazon wanted to go crazy. They DO have a history of doing that.

Amazon isn't putting anyone out of business any more than we're being saved by anti tobacco laws. E-books are here to stay and the cost to produce an e-book and sell it is MUCH lower than for a print book. BOrders didn't go out of business because of Amazon, they simply became too corporate. Poor customer service didn't help them either. Local bookstores will probably see a rise again because B&N and Borders are gone.

I would say Amazon's low prices on printed books not just their digital copies contributed to the downfall of Borders. I'm guilty as charged. Like most people I know I would go to Borders, check out a book and if I wanted to buy it I would go on Amazon and get it for 30%-50% cheaper.

Cool that your an author. I would love to write some stuff one day. I have an idea for a story I want to write. I'm into fantasy kind of things like Lord of the Rings.
