DRAPER, Utah (CBS Las Vegas) – One Utah school district believes a cougar mascot would be insensitive to women.

The Canyons School District overrode the students top choice of a cougar mascot for their high school that is to be completed in 2013.

Would-be Corner Canyon High School students chose the Cougars as their mascot — a name principal Mary Bailey said carries an ugly connotation that is disrespectful to women.

In popular culture, the cougar is a sexually aggressive middle-aged woman who attracts younger men.

The school board, which consists of six men and one woman, thought the Charger would be more appropriate, which was on the ballot but failed to appeal to students as the cougar had.

Cougars — the large mountain cats — are popular in Utah. Brigham Young University, considered conservative, uses the cougar for its mascot.

Bailey said Corner Canyon’s close proximity to BYU was another reason to use the Charger.

And what a "charger" doesn't carry an ugly connotation that is disrespectful to women. Obviously haven't seen my credit card bills.

I guess you can't have every other school in Utah be the Cougars. Also, I always saw the Cougar nickname as a positive one. Am I just an insensitive male?:scratchhe Dunno but why it's even an issue is ridiculous.
I know we have at least one cougar hunter here who I think is with me on this one.

people need to get over the fact that life can be offensive! i am glad that it is no longer acceptable to fling racial, sexual, gender slurs, etc., but can we PLEASE move this a little farther back towards center?

and +1 to "cougar" being positive. as euphemisms go, saying "you are a female who chooses to be empowered by your sexuality despite contemporary mores dictating that your age should be a limiting factor" is cool. and older chicks DO rock! 0)

That's one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read. Hands down.

Seriously? Unless they planned on using some MILF as their mascot, the level of over-sensitivity has gone above and beyond that of those that cry foul over Native American mascots.

Bob.....did you make this up? C'mon......really? If this is real, and of course it must be....all I can say is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH! What's happened to my country, and perhaps more importantly, why could six "men" not tell one middle aged female principal, who obviously has issues, to pound sand?

Unfortunately it won't end. This country is creating generations of apologetic, soft defeatists.

Edit: I guess that the University of Maine at Farmington had better duck and cover.
