I've had both the DFH 120, and the Pliny the Elder. If Russian River saw the prices that DFH is asking for the 120 minute I'm sure they'd consider making more! As that's the reason, as I understand it...that they don't make more. It's just plain expensive to make.
I do, however, admire...that amongst all the fanfare, and the praise for Pliny the Elder....that when/if you're lucky enough to find it....it's still only $4.50 - $5 per 16.9 oz. Now i've never had the DFH 120...but I can't fathom that when that time comes, if presented with the option of 2 16 oz Plinys......or 1 12 oz DFH 120....that I would ever choose the DFH 120. Speculation I know, and perhaps very slight East/West bias, but 2 Plinys? It's a no-brainer.
Some of these breweries could learn a thing or two from Russian River IMO....(i'm talking to you Rogue)....
Yep, I'm doing whatever I can to make sure I try some this release. I had other things going on the last couple of years when it was released.(Oh yeah, and as far as the Younger goes, I'm just gonna live vicariously through a couple Cali friends, until I can get a family vacation to coincide with the release.)
If you figure out who has it please let me know. Maybe meet up for a brew and cigar some time. :bottle:If they do in Seattle, they will in Portland.
Sounds good, you do the same!If you figure out who has it please let me know. Maybe meet up for a brew and cigar some time. :bottle:
I hear ya Larry, but I think it's the right thing to do. The brewery doesn't know the smaller or lesser known pubs, the distributor does. It wouldn't be fair for the same place to get the limited supply year after year, so the distributor can see fit to reward certain places. Most of the places that get the beer have a few days to a week to advertise they are getting it, so you just have to make sure to pay attention. If I lived out there I don't know if I would like this part....
"One note- we do not dictate where our distributors choose to send Pliny the Younger. That is completely up to them and we trust their decisions!"
You may not know until the last minute where you can get it and from whom!
Not really in the same class. 120 is 18% and a triple/quad ipa if there was a class like that. Pliny the younger is still 11%. May be in the same category as elder but it is a really impressive beer. It is amazing any time but very few ipa's have come close to very fresh Pliny for me.Never had DFH 120 or Pliny the Elder/Younger but I have had "Heady Topper" by Alchemy Brewing and I'd be willing to bet it is just as good as those mentioned or even better!
That's BS. Vinny has swung his weight around plenty of times before... he doesn't dictate where it goes, but it always ends up at all of his ol'friends bars in San Diego - every one that ever supported his first brewery, Blind Pig, when he started brewing in Temecula. (Where do you think the IPA got it's name from? It doesn't end in "-tion")"One note- we do not dictate where our distributors choose to send Pliny the Younger. This for me... Pliny under 2 weeks old is amazing! Hell even under a month old it's still better than most....but very few ipa's have come close to very fresh Pliny for me.
Gibby, Have you tried Heady Topper? Not really in the same class. 120 is 18% and a triple/quad ipa if there was a class like that. Pliny the younger is still 11%. Having had them all fresh, Heady Topper can easily hang with either Pliney . But I will give you Pliney the Younger is what DFH 120 wants to be. Although Pliney uses hop extract to ramp up the hops and DFH consider it cheating ;-)Not really in the same class. 120 is 18% and a triple/quad ipa if there was a class like that.
