My dad sent me an email this morning asking if he should get the Kindle Fire or the iPad 2. For his purposes, I think he'll be happiest with the iPad. However, I know one of the biggest things he'll miss is being able to take notes while reading out of the Bible (or any other paper book). Do either of these devices have that capability? He doesn't write large memos, but occationally jots down stuff to remember while reading.

Not sure if there are any Bible apps for the ipad that let you make notes I'm sure there must be one out there that lets you bookmark and make notes.. some other brothers may be better suited to answer that one. However if you have your heart set on getting him an ipad I recommend holding off till March when the ipad 3 rolls out you'll get a significantly better tablet for the same price (if history is anything to go with).

There is a bible app that I have on my android and my computer called youversion. You can take notes on it and make bookmarks. I would imagine that it is available on both the kindle fire and the ipad2.

Or you could wait until June when the iPads 3s rolls out. Or better yet wait till September when the iPads 4 comes. Or you could get a quality android device for half the money and do more with it.

Thanks everyone! I don't have an iPad myself so I didn't know what may be available in the Apple Store. I'll let him know the features are available so he can just look for one that suits him best.

I heard rumors the iPad 3 was coming out soon, I didn't know if there was a date set yet. I'll go do some digging.

Thanks!

Get him an android tablet and then he can sync everything with google.
I love Andriod and all it's capabilities but I haven't seen them release a good tablet that's quite as user-friendly or app-friendly as the iPad. He doesn't have gmail or anything so the sync features would be lost on him.

...although, my mom did get the Droid X a while back and she couldn't be happier. Maybe she's just more technically savvy than him :computer:

Really? So I guess you have not heard of the Galaxy, XOOM, Xyboard, or any of the other quality products out there.

I guess it is easier for people to just over pay for a TOY. Buy the Apple, they need your money!

Why do you feel the need to be an ass in most of your replies?

most bible apps will allow you to highlight, bookmark, and jot down notes. however, note taking in these apps is limited to typing on the iPad which is a bit of a labored thing. he might want to buy a stylus and use penultimate or another note taking app.

My wife has an ipad. I was considering a kindle fire at one point but after she got this I wouldn't get one. It's pretty user friendly, the battery life so far is really good. Its much larger than the kindle and the only downside is glare outside that the kindle screen handles better.

I didn't realize they were this close to releasing the third model. I'll definitely tell him to hold off until at least the annoucement is made. I don't think he's in any hurry. He's just been traveling a lot lately and it would be nice to have an all inclusive device.

Damn, sorry. Thought this was an open discussion. I will move along and let you guys talk about Apple.

If you wanted opinions, and that is what I gave, then you should accept them without conditions.

I was unaware I was being an Ass. I just can't stand Apple, and the blind following they have. To each his own I guess. Sorry again.

Opinions can be given without condescending & rude behavior. Remember, it's hard to read tone and intent in text.
Keeping that in mind will take you a long way here. Forgetting that can only cost you respect.

I've been using the Tecarta Bible app for the iPhone (and I'm almost certain there's one of the iPad) and it let's you take notes, highlight, copy text, among other things. I recently starting reading the bible through iBooks though and it works really good. There's an small icon next to a verse you take a note on. If you get an iPad, I would suggest both.
