Look boys, no need to get on a soap box and give me shit. My BELIEF is that someone had to put the stop to it and I don't think it would be someone outside of politics.

So let's keep the focus on what has happened, not what I said.

Wow, whenever kids sports teams or school groups ask for donations we make sure they know who we are, that they can accept and that we aren't listed on their sponsors in most cases. It never crossed my mind that we could donate to a kids dance troup and be turned down by Wounded Warriors

No matter if you agree or disagree (and I do) they do seem to have that policy published on their website for events.

I acknowledge that my fundraiser is not religious, political, or sexual in nature, and that it does not involve firearms, tobacco or the co-branding of alcohol.
Still, unfortunate.

I have emailed them asking for an explanation. Depending on their response, I will voice my dissatisfaction with them for this policy. I will let you all know if I receive a response.

Generally speaking, I'm pretty sure Dave has a valid point. Pretty much the only way that I can think of that an organization such as WW would turn down money from a legitimate source would be due to contractual obligation. I don't know the facts, but I'll lay you even money that some large contributor like P&G, or more probably a pharmaceutical corporation like Bristol Meyer or J&J has made their donations conditional on not accepting money from a tobacco company. Having said that, it begs the question; are they accepting donations from say, Pepsico, Mc Donald's or Coca Cola? The same even money says they are. Here's the twist....obesity is on pace to very soon become the number one preventable cause of death in the US. But it isn't politically correct to say so.

Hey WW has the right to do what they feel they have to. It's a stupid policy but hey if you have a large company/individual donating Hundreds of thousands of dollars on the condition no donations from tobacco company what would you do. Stand on principle and turn that money away or just accept their terms as a necessary evil?

Hey It sucks but there are many more other great organizations out there that would gladly accept the donation.

There is a huge anti-tobacco push in the military right now. This comes from the GOVERNMENT, period. The ties between WW and the military go without saying.

WE have let the crazies run wild in Washington and WE have allowed "tobacco" to be a synonym with "cigarettes." If we don't start properly educating people on the MAJOR differences between cigars and cigarettes soon, it won't even matter.

I no longer think it's insane to worry that one day those of us who enjoy cigars will have a special stamp on our ID cards or have to wear a special patch on our sleeve.

Hey Guys,
A bit of a late followup but it took WW a minute to get back to me. However, they did get back to me. I just got of the telephone with one of their reps. Bottom line, WW will accept money from anyone that wants to donate. HOWEVER, WW will not endorse or co-sponsor events nor allow co-branding with: Tobacco, Alcohol, Firearms, or Religious Affiliations.

In my discussions, which were very pleasant and professional by the way, the over simplified explanation goes like this: If company X wants to donate that is fine. However, if company X wants to put out a cigar with WW or the label; that is a no go. If company X wants to host an event, a no go. However, if company X wants to be involved in an event already being hosted, that is fine as long as no co-branding is done. For example: I host a BBQ to raise money for WW, beer company wants to be involved to sell beer etc. That’s fine as long as the beer company doesn’t promote the WW aspect or allow signage to include both labels etc.

Another example would be the adult entertainment industry. WW would not want a film produced that is associated with them. However, if that company wants to donate money then WW would not say no.

Hope this clears up some of the confusion out there. WW is not saying no to donations, just that they don’t want to allow co-sponsoring of politically polarizing industries.

Dave

P.S. Don’t shoot the messenger.

it's their charity. i guess they can run it the way they want to. this may cut down some of the monies they might receive, but it's entirely up to them. just as it is entirely up to the DONOR as to whom he wants to donate his money to.

Playing devil's advocate here, but this stance will probably help WW in the long run. The bottom line is that cigars are viewed just as cigarettes to the majority of the population, it's all tobacco to them. I can see why they would not want to become too intertwined with any politically polarizing industries, and tobacco certainly fits that bill.

Still a great organization in my book.
