So there are quite a few guys I work with who know I love my habanos.

One guy went to Cuba last year, and grabbed me a box of Monte #2's at my request, and when he came back sold them to me at his cost. This is basically how it always goes. Someone goes and asks me if I want something, and when they come back they give it to me for whatever they paid for it, and I'll generally round it up to the nearest $20 dollar bill or so, not to be a cheap bugger.

Well this guy goes this year, but forgets to tell me he's heading out. I catch him a couple of weeks ago in the locker room, and notice the nice tan, and ask where he went. He then says Cuba, and apologizes as he meant to ask me if I wanted him to pick up anything in particular.

I say no big deal, but he then proceeds to say he grabbed a box of RyJ tubo #3's and says 'You want them', and tosses them to me from his locker. I look at the nicely sealed box, and figure tubo's are nice and protected so I dont have to worry about them sitting out to long or anything.

I tell him yes, and throw them in my locker, and ask 'what do I owe you?'

He responds with an off the top of his head response... 'I dont know... give me like $200.'

I dont really question the amount, and assume that is about what he paid, as no one has ever demanded a premium, and Im not quite sure what they go for myself, and tell him I'll pay him a little later.

I then proceed to go and smoke couple, and retrieve some cash from an ATM. A little later, it finally sinks in that $200 is a little steep for the cigar, and I check a favorite online retailer, and they are selling there for like $117, so you know Cuba has got to be cheaper.

Any how, lesson learned, I'll check a price list before committing, instead of trusting Im getting close to the actual price paid. Still cheaper then retail, but a pretty douche bag move if you ask me. The guys around the office agree.

I agree that it sounds like a blatant case of douche-baggery. I'm not a firm beliver in karma per se but people like this usually end up getting paid back in some way or another.

Try not to be too bitter about it and look for the silver lining. At least you got some good smokes out of the deal. You also learned a lot about this guy's character which may be helpful in business dealings (outside of cigars) in the future.

Certainly sounds like a case of asshattery. At the same time, if he is not a cigar smoker - he may have also been duped into buying them at that price as well. Perhaps not the most likely option, but it still is one. I'd have to guess there are people on the island who realize they can jack up the price on items to tourists.

While common courtesy would dictate a little "extra" to someone for the trouble of lugging a box of cigars a thousand miles, I do agree 80 might a little much.

But who knows, he may have paid 160 for the box and maybe wanted the rest as the cost for doing business. You wouldn't know for sureunless you saw a receipt. I guess you know who to avoid for favors in the future.

Years ago my mom's coworker gave her a 20 to stick in a slot machine on her trip to Vegas. She ended up winning about 800 from that and my mom gave him the whole 820, with which he kept the entire amount with a brief 'thanks.'

Never been to Cuba but have also read that depending where you buy prices are different. Tourists get taken advantage of easily if they don't know where to buy.

Wouldn't you like to know?
One last thought is if he had traveled to Cuba back in the late 90's he may just be under the impression that is how it is done. Back then even the distributors couldn't get enough cigars to keep everyone happy. Many tourists learned that if they brought back cigars even stores would buy them and you could pay for your trip. Times have changed an there is no longer a worldwide shortage. We still get the occasional customer coming in thinking things are still that way. It is also why there were soapy fakes floating around the Canadian market for so long.

not at all surprised to hear about this kinda conduct where you work.... I have heard all sorts of stories about your workplace....
Oh Johnny boy! You can't believe all the rumors now.

They are May'11 box BTW, and do smoke excellent at this young age. I could call him on it, but I suppose he could have got duped himself... how can I prove it? Ah... I can't, just like the Gingerale at the coffee shop I think is Coke and Sprite mixed together.

I just look at it as a lesson learned. I should have known better. Ever have one of those friends that hands you something of his and asks if you want it, implying he's giving it to you, and when you say 'yes' he then turns around and says, 'just give me $30 bucks the next time you see me'. I have a buddy who used to always do that with his used shit, so I should have learned from that experience. Oddly enough we do work together, but he isnt responsible for this one :ccool:

Not to make you feel even worse but a Box of RyJ #3's in Cuba cost around $72 cuc's. Not sure if that is tubo's or not but even if it's not they probably cost less than $100.
Still cheaper than Canada but not a particularly nice gesture from a coworker.
You live and learn.

Live & learn! Years ago I had a 'friend' call me up and said that he had an extra ticket to go see My Morning Jacket & asked if I wanted to go. Of course! "Hey, I'll drive!" I picked everyone up & drove the hour & half to Philly (tolls, parking), but we decided to swing through a drive through for a little pre-show food. Everyone placed there orders, as I pulled up to the window everyone got there money together and passed it up. My 'friend' collected it up & stuck the wad into his pocket... :angerFU:

Sometimes people make a mistake, but that case was a clear red flag to his character that I won't forget. F that guy. For my part, I do my best to know what people's expectations are ahead of time!

I had something similar happen to be a few years ago, which brought me to say to myself, "Never again!" I don't accept anything from anybody anymore, sometimes that bugs people, but I just prefer it that way.

Reading these stories it sounds like a couple of you should put on your big boy pants and say something instead of get screwed over and taking it, lol. People do some shady things, just can't let them get away with it.
