Most people on the site make the argument that a cigar that is never smoked is a waste and there is no point. Does anyone here "collect" cigars, as in, acquire cigars they don't ever intend to smoke? I'm not talking about a select few that you're waiting for the right moment and never seem to find it, I'm talking about cigars you never want to smoke for whatever reason. Maybe it's ultra rare, maybe it's really old, whatever.

I don't think I have anything that I never intend to smoke, but a couple I plan on hanging on to for quite a while. I could imagine acquiring something pretty HTF, like an 80s CC Davidoff or something that I've read was past its prime and just hanging on to it because it's so damn old.

Intentionally, no. I have a few BBMF maddys that I can't seem to find the time to smoke. I'm going to Aruba in August, so that may be the day I snip one of them considering there is nothing to do but lay on the beach for hours.

Here lies the key to keep sampling from anything you age. Just like wine, cigars will peak and then start going downhill after the peak. Luckily its not a small window so as long as you smoke your cigars on a fairly regular basis, you're gold. This becomes tough if you only have 1 or 2 but hey they're made for consumption so consume! I personally have quite a bit thats resting but nothing that I never will smoke (unless its something that I find not to my liking). I love doing the humi tetris thing and finding a box I totally forgot about. G1

Like you, I have a "collection" of cigars that I plan on hanging on to for awhile. It's not that I will never smoke them, I will need a very special occasion for me to light them up (that may be tomorrow, or it may never come). I fool myself that I am gracefully aging them for that perfect occasion!

I have very limited funds but I have a vast amount of desires. Because of this I stick to mid/high range cigars but only on a couple time per month smoking allowance. This lets me age all of my $5-15 cigars for a long time and lets them mature into even better gems. I will not buy stuff I won't smoke as it is outweighed by being able to purchase multiple cigars that I can enjoy. I do on the other hand collect Tatuaje boxes as I see them as artwork and it is more affordable than other forms of art I would put on my shelves instead. Cigars on the other hand can be made to look like art, or rolled in some crazy shape(like opus) but at the end of the day they are tucked away in my humidor and not seen. The taste is what matters, not the rarity of collecting the fancy shape they are rolled in. Hence why I have no problem playing humidor roulette and grabbing anything to smoke. The only cigar I wont smoke is my OR Black Label that I am waiting for my birthday to smoke as I needed a special birthday cigar.

I used to buy all the avo LE's to "collect" but now I know I will age and smoke them all at some point. As much as I love them they are taking up so much space in the humi so over time I'll smoke them as the times are right. Other than that there is absolutely nothing that I will never smoke in my humidor.

I intend to smoke all my cigars. Like many others, I've got my fair share of cigars that are being saved for that special occaions, but more and more these days, i'm saying to heck with that mentality and smoking the "good" ones more and more regularly. I believe it was the movie Sideways that put it best, something along the lines of not waiting on the special occasion to open that good bottle of wine, but making an occasion special by opening that bottle of wine.

The same is true with me and my "good" cigars. Make the ordinary moments special by smoking the good ones now. Life is short.

I don't "collect", I grab whatever I'm in the mood for when I open the humi. Sometimes I'll plan a nice cigar to make it a "special occasion", but I purposely leave a lot of cigars alone to get more age on them, but I don't keep them just to "collect."

In the words of the great poet, "I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em." -- Ron White

I didn't have a sealed box in my "collection" until last year when I put back a box of tatuaje TAA to age. Now I have 3 others that are still sealed to age but I fully intend to smoke every one of them if I live long enough. I smoke with my dad every few weeks and try to make memories with him. The best talks we've ever had have been in the duck blind and on the porch or deck with a cigar. I'm 34 with a law degree but I think he thinks I'm still 15 until we light up and talk like men. I hope we have a lot more Sunday afternoons with my "collection."

I plan on smoking every cigar I have. I have a couple of gems though that will be very tough to find the right occasion to light them up. The only cigar that I'm not sure if I will or not is a Cuban from the 1930's someone gifted me. It's just such a cool conversation piece and just to have in there from that long ago. That will be the toughest to decide to smoke or not.

I smoke 'em all. Sometimes, before they are "ready." I sometimes regret it, but there constantly so many more great cigars coming out it's hard to keep up. I know a botl who collects cigars (mostly Clear Havanas) and viewing his collection is a treat. The box art is incredible. So much history.

the joy is not in the having, but in the experiencing. everything will be burned and enjoyed, god willing, given a long enough time frame.
^^^^ This ^^^^

A lot of the enjoyment for me comes from the sharing too. I like to share my htf sticks with other guys who enjoy them as well, which to me is perhaps better than me just smoking it. I've even given away cigars that I've only ever been able to get my hands on one of, but it was so important to another brother that I have given them away rather than try them. *shrugs* I lived just fine before them, and I'll live just fine after them. If something I collect makes somebody else happy too, then I'm good. :)

Every cigar I own though, will either be smoked by me or somebody else. I don't intend to have any that I just "own" for the sake of owning.
