While searching for components for the tuppidor, I stopped into a local cigar shop to see if they had any crystal gel? The clerk told me that he uses the beads out of a diaper and mixes with water to a mush, then puts the mush into a jar with holes in the lid. That it's the same chemical composition...

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Are diaper beads perfumed at all? I have a 2yo and a bunch of too small diapers that I could use. Or will i ruin my cigars... Or die from diaper bead poisoning?...

Well yes, baby diapers contain a gel that absorbs moisture. As for its ability to give off humidity, I'm not sure it was designed for that purpose. The crystals would probably dry out eventually so yeah I guess they would give off some humidity, but not sure how well they'd regulate your Tupperdor. The real question I have is what in the hell prompted him to try that??? :scratchhe I would recommend Bovedas for your Tupperdors. There are a number of online retailers that sell them if you can't find any locally, just hit up any of the site sponsors.

Might as well just use a tampon to absorb excess moisture.
Just make sure you don't try and smoke it :stretchgr:stretchgr

But in seriousness, No clue on the baby diapers but yeah, Boveda packs ftw, about 5 bucks a pack and they'll last 6 months(or more) in a tuppador.

Beads are so cheap... And cigars are so precious, why take a chance.

:-\
Outta the mouth of babes...

Rex is right on. Don't mess around.

Beads, or Dan's suggestion to get boveda packages (what I use, FWIW) - nothing else is as foolproof.

Well I guess you could always take a shit in your humidor in an emergency and your cigars would be okay!?! LOL

But for real... stay the hell away from diapers man. Do yourself a favor and buy some beads... they're so easy to maintain and you won't have to worry about your cigars one bit.

Diapers absorb, they don't release. So if you live in a climate that is nearly a perfect 65% rH anyway, this might work. Otherwise, clear kitty litter beads are REALLY cheap, and will do a much better job.

If you need something right away that's really cheap ... clean off an uncooked potato and but it in with your stogies.

No clue what prompted him to use diaper beads... Probably the same properties as kitty litter, but smaller?...
I'll try the kitty litter beads/crystals first and maybe upgrade to a real cigar product if the RH doesn't stabilize.

Has anyone geeked out their humidors: txt msg when RH drops/raises above threshold, LED backlighting, etc?

I remember reading a thread a while back detailing a project with the text messaging RH. I don't remember if it was here or on another site though. I want to say it was here, but I'm too lazy to search this morning. Maybe someone else knows where it is and can post a link. If not I'll see if I can't find it later today. The LED lights have been done and should be fairly simple to accomplish, though in a few cases I've read that it's increased the temps.

I would think LED's are the coolest and most efficient lights on the market. Unless someone goes extreme, I would assume minimal heat gain from a few LED's. The RH text is a great idea. Would love to know more about that. Any programmers out there? Sounds like an app I would go for!

Led's require placement on a heat sink to cool them off. They produce a tremendous amount of heat at the light.
