So I'm sitting in my house tonight at 2am and its almost 90 degrees in here. AC crapped out while I was at work...wife took the kids and ran off to her sister's place to escape the heat...now I'm sitting at home alone, uncomfortable, and sweating. Hope the repairman can make it here early tomorrow...It'll be over 90 in here in a heartbeat once the sun comes up.

Just felt like ranting...thanks for listening...lol

It's a lot of fun, isn't it? The A/C on our RV crapped out last week-and you can't just go to a store and pick up the parts for that! We had to take the dog to work, so he wouldn't overheat while we were gone. Good luck!

I feel your pain, but only sort of. In the hundreds here with no end in sight, and my RV fridge can't keep up. So I put a circulation fan inside which sort of helped, then had to stop working on installing the outside fan 3 times last night for thunderstorms. Luckily my AC still works but if I lose that I'm toast. So far all I've lost is about 40 bucks in groceries.

Mine went out three years ago in the middle of a humid PA 95 degree week. Then because it's an early geothermal system it uses a weird compressor I guess, and still runs on R22. So it took over 10 days to find/acquire the compressor needed to repair my unit. If it goes out again the whole system will need replacing because the compressors are likely to not be around.

We took cold showers to cool off before bed.

Happened to us a couple weeks ago. Fortunately it was an easy and pretty cheap fix. No fun though at all. Hope things get cool quick for you .

Home Depot opens at 6. I'd be first on line pick up a window unit, stick it in the bathroom window, put the exhaust fan on temporarily- portable man cave till the AC guy comes. I feel ya pain though. Had our unit break down and of course they always break down when its HOT and not when its just maintaining cool. and the fix was just a capacitor which even with the tech coming out, total cost was only $95. Good Luck. G1

I think the outside unit is fried. When the AC kicks on, the fan in the house runs, but the outside one just buzzes and the fan doesn't move.

Happened to me last month just like you said with the fan and buzzing. It sounded like the blower motor was burnt out but turned out to be the capacitor, much cheaper in the end and I hope this is the same for you.

Exactly what happened to me. Funny (now anyway) thing was, it must be fairly common as the tech just opened the unit up, the capacitor looked like it was inflated slightly like a balloon so it was an easy diagnosis and even easier fix, Hope this is the problem as its an easy and cheap fix! G1

Capacitors aren't expensive at all. If you can get to it and get it to a parts store, they will test it out for you. We have 3 of them on our unit, and all 3 tested fine. Then it was off to Amazon to start ordering parts to repair it. Turned out to be a blown motor.

Been there, don't that. It blows. Happened to me 2 years ago in the middle of the hottest summer ever. I'd get home from work, my thermometer would read ol. By 11 pm it would finally read 99. Sucked, don't know hoe I didn't get divorced. Didn't help that I work underground in electric vaults/man holes and have a truck with no ac. Finally got the central ac fixed last year. Wouldn't you know it, where it drained it got clogged up, so the unit would stop. It was in the middle of a 95+ hear wave. Alls good now, for now at least. Good luck.

I agree the capacitors are cheap and easy to replace, I think when I replaced a bad capacitor in my outside unit it was $9 with tax and took about 15-20 minutes to change. A good friend of mine had the same problem with his outside unit and called an AC repairman because he didn't want to attempt to fix it himself then complained about the $200+ repair bill to replace a cheap part! My recommendation is to always check the capacitor and there is a relay in the outside unit also that is fairly cheap if your capacitor is good before spending the money for a repairman to come out if you are able to.

I feel your pain...mine went out 2 months ago and it was the compressor. I thought it only had a 5 year warranty but found out that it had 10...the repair service we use is great and they made the call to the Vendor...they called me back and said that the compressor was still under warranty for another 5 years but instead of my bill for $800 ( service call, etc. etc. ) it was only $200 including doing a tune up on the whole unit. I have zoned HVAC with two 2 1/2 ton units and they are used from May til Oct. Double check your warranty as a lot of them will still be under it...always pays to check.

I was hoping when he first came to test that it was my capacitor..no suck luck as the fan wouldn't run...the compressor just seized up and died and I was there when the sparks flew so I was lucky I was there to turn off all power to that beast.

If the compressor is running and it is just a fan issue....get a box fan and put it over the top of your unit and plug it in with an extension cord, on high. That will get you through til the tech can get there.

Trust me.. I do this for a living.

Thanks everyone. Repair guy came out and she's alive once again. Capacitor seems like a common thing with AC units. Well, its still hot, but getting better by the minute...down to 84 and still falling.
