So I finally found a stick my Dad really seemed to enjoy smoking - Torano Exodus 50 year Robusto's. I quite enjoyed mine as well

He also commented on my 15 count herf-a-dor, actually saying it would double as a great dry-box on canoe floats, Lol.

Anyway, what I'm thinking is Christmas gift- 40 count herf and since he doesn't smoke cigars often, a couple of fivers of the Exodus 50 year's and then either a drymistat or small heartfelt tube.

So aside from the j'ne sais quoi you get from aging in a cedar humidor, any problems you guys can see with this arrangement for storage?

Not a problem at all. For something the size of a cooler the cedar helps with reclamation but for what you are talking about a couple of bovedas or the heartfelt tube is all that is needed.

If he doesn't smoke much and doesn't keep it very full you might want to go with a smaller size (less empty space). And if it were me I'd probably toss in a couple of Heartfelts or some Bovedas. Helps to keep the humidity regulated easier with a little extra that what's called for.

Great, thanks!

It'll probably scare the crap out of aficionados, (but then we aren't talking about CC's or even Opus's,) but the real reason for the extra size is to get the pressure equilization vent for air travel (he's bidding some work in Afghanistan) and also so he has room to literally keep his phone and wallet dry on a canoe float if he wants to. He's into practical multi-purpose gadgets. But I totally agree with you otherwise on matching capacity to amount to be stored, and I appreciate the thoughts on extra regulating devices.

Sounds like a good set-up and a nice Christmas present for your Dad!

Personally I have switched from a Drymistat tube to a Bovedas in my travel humidor, mostly because I have gone to 65% humidity and discovered that you can recharge Bovedas, making them cost effective. For your Dad though the Drymistat tube might be the best option. Mainly because it is simpler to maintain than the Hearfelt tube (just add water instead of spritzing and such) and contrary to what many people will tell you it does maintain 2 way humidity. Hearfelt beads do have quicker recovery and you can be more precise with your humidity levels however they require a little bit more "putzing" which may not be something that a casual smoker may want to mess with.

Anyway, that is just my opinion FWIW....The bottom line is that the set-up you are proposing would work great for storage and humidity control and would also be a kick-ass Chrismas present for your dad!!!
