So, I am not sure if you guys have this elsewhere, but this city has a shit-ton of skunks roaming the neighborhoods around the central part of town (there are a few undeveloped canyons around town, and a giant park in the middle where the San Diego zoo is). Lately, a young skunk has claimed the shrubs in our apartment building courtyard as a place to call home. Mind you, this is where I smoke cigars (and where I am posting from at the moment). I am trying to come up with a polite way to convince this little guy to move along so as not to do him any harm (or get sprayed). Any of you guys have any experience with skunks?

Just read where lemon and orange peels scattered about will drive them away. Evidently skunks hate citrus.

The article also says ammonia will do the trick. So some really young yard gars in the bushes will do the trick. I think you can pick up a bundle of dark sharks on the cheap from CI and then throw them at the little stink bomb.

The third option is dog urine.... So, again, the dark sharks should do the trick.

Dark Sharks it is! Worst case scenario = I will have a four legged smoking buddy that smells worse than I do after a smoke.

Was just looking and it seems San Diego Animal Control doesn't remove nuisance skunks. They instead contract it out and it'll cost you some $$ to have one removed. Bummer. If the above doesn't work I'd say you may want to look into it though...or make the apartment owner aware (it is a safety concern).

I would say use a 12 gauge, but since you are in an apartment complex...crossbow? Only kidding a little.

I would suggest the tried and true method of luring him away with a female skunk. Since you may not want to take the chance of checking random skunks to see if they are male or female you might want to just get a female black cat and paint a white stripe on it. Sometimes cats will randomly get a white stripe because someone has recently painted a fence that they walk under or a road crew is painting the lines on the street and they accidentally paint the cat but since this is not likely you should just grab a random female black cat and give it a white stripe. You can also rub it with limburger cheese to make it smell more authentic. This should stir the loins of your neighborhood skunk who will hop away in pursuit of his new found love.

If that does not work you may have to purchase a copy of the Rosetta Stone for French. It is my understanding that all skunks are fluent in French and hopefully you will be able to persuade him to move to a different neighborhood once you are able to converse with him in his native tongue.

Anyway these are just my random thoughts based upon watching WAY too much TV as a kid. If neither of these works you may just have to follow ZAMA80's suggestion and BLAAAAST him with a 12 gauge.

I know this is going to sound absolutely horrible, but when we lose a dog here in Arkansas, and want to bury them out back or somewhere, we will also use the citrus stuff. It helps keep dogs, cats, skunks, other critters away. We usually put alot towards the top, etc.

Another thing that may help, is Mothballs. If your like me, then you will ignore that suggestion, as I couldnt STAND to be smoking around that nonsense, but it works. We usually pop some in the ground with our thumb, so they stay a little bit longer. Then we may cast a few out as well. It really doesnt take alot. I would say if you have a bush area like 10 feet long, and maybe 5 feet wide, that throwing 5 or so back there would probably do the job?

Otherwise, the only thing you can do is kill it.... unfortunately skunks are hard to get pointing the other way, with out them spraying everything around. We had a rabid one around our area (I didnt know it was rabid at the time) so I just wanted him to go the other direction. Took out my 22 and shot around him. He came running at me (after he sprayed the area first) I had to put him down.....

I also shot one (not killing it) one time, and it sprayed FOREVER! till it died. So... For everyone else... Make SURE you put it down quick! My yard stunk up my house soo bad we had to stay a night at the in-laws....

my 2 cents,
-Chrisso

Could always do the haveaheart trap relocation. Would only recommend it if you drive a pick-up though. Trap them, come from behind the trap and throw a blanket or heavy towel over the trap. Put the trap in the truck and drop him off in a better wooded area.
Skunks really don't want to spray you and since they're nocturnal they shouldn't really come in to much contact with you.

Wish I had some suggestions, because we have skunks (or a skunk) that will sometimes inhabit our backyard. The problem is our dog, who immediately runs toward the skunk, either wanting to play or be protective(often hard to tell which!...Love my dog :)

Anyway, I hope you find a solution...Glad that you don't want to hurt him in the process :)

I got a cheap air-soft gun for this exact reason. Not that I'd actually shoot to hurt it but I'd definitely shoot in its direction to scare it off. Haven't had to use it yet!

Call the "Turtle Man" Live action! Love this guy...We watch his show all the time. Just can't help it. Plus he'll do it for beef jerky or some fried fish. LOL

I saw on TV, that is you get a black cat and paint it with a white stripe, your problems are solved.

Skunks are a nuisance just like any mouse or rat. If you want to keep it alive then that will be fun to deal with. If you want to get rid of the problem then you can deal with them like we sometimes have to on my grandpa's farm. Use a trap with a long rope. Have a hole dug deep enough for the trap. Fill the hole with water. Drag trapped skunk into the water. When they spray it will be in the water so that takes care of the smell. You can use a .22 air rifle but they will spray. I know it can sound harsh to some but then again a lot of those are the same ones who poison/kill trap rats/mice.

Also if you see a skunk during day time it is most likely rabid. They are a popular carrier of rabies.

This would be great, aside from the part that I live in a concrete jungle.

This I did not know. Thanks for the tip!
