Had my first cigar in a long time a week ago while taking some time of in the finger lakes. Didn't know what to get and ended up with a Macanudo Cafe Crystal from a local store at the lake that smoked dry, hot, and fast (so much for the fancy crystal...)

As poor of an experience that was, I did manage to relax and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Having the dog and wife relaxing with me under a quiet clear night sky certainly helped, as did the tequila.

Figuring I need to make some better choices, hit the forums and picked up the 2011 cigar afficianto sampler from cigar.com and a cheap humidor from cigarbid. Tried the Cabaiguan Guapo a few evenings ago, and found it to be 1000x better than the cigar that time forgot up at the lake. Haven't felt that relaxed in a long time, usually so busy on the laptop or iPad while watching tv or doing something else, was nice to just sit out on the deck, drink some whiskey, and concentrate on the cigar and conversation instead.

Tried the Warlock Robusto last night and liked it even more since its bolder flavor kept changing. Paired that one with some Rye. Seemed to have a dark spicyness to it that I can't quite describe.

All in all, I find myself thinking more about an evening cigar and worrying less about anything else which is a nice change. Now if I could just get the humidity right (no central air, in the basement and I soaked the damn heartfelt beads through since the analog dial kept reading around 50% but the digital weather station thermometer I just tried got is showing close to 80%...)

Anyway, figured I'd check in and say hi.

Welcome to BOTL (great story)! The first thing you must do is calibrate your hygrometers to make sure you are getting accurate readings (although I would only use the digital one as they are far more reliable than analog). I would recommend the salt test or the Boveda One-Step Calibration Kit.

A couple other questions:
-What size humidor are you using? Mine for example is 100 count.
-What kind of humidification device are you using?
-How did you prime your humidor?

As for excess humidity, I had the exact same issue. After priming my humidor I had readings of 80% as well (my hygrometer was calibrated). To help with that I'm running a dehumidifier in the room my humidor is in and am getting to a point where I've almost found the setting that keeps my humidor at 70% (where I prefer to keep my cigars but that is up to you, some like theirs at 65%).

You will find BOTL is a great forum to be part of. Hope the info helps!

Looks like it will hold about 40, the descriptions I've seen vary from 35-50. Its this model ( http://www.cigarsinternational.com/proddisp.asp?item=M-SH40 ).

I think I over primed it, I kept wiping it down once or twice a day with a shotglass of water in it, and got a large heartland rod that I soaked through and put in there too.

Yesterday I dumped the beads out onto a paper towel and dried them a bit, and now the (uncalibrated) digital weatherstation is reading 75%. I took all the cigars out of the cellophane too figuring they'd suck up some humidity and help it settle. The guage I'm using is one of those indoor/outdoor temp and humidity gauges so who knows how accurate it is, figure I'll order a real digital one this week and calibrate then.

Tried a Rocky Patel Fifteenth Anniversary Torpedo last night. Actually didn't find the first half or so to be anything special, but did like the last 3rd. So far of what I've tried the Warlock is my favorite.

Welcome! What part of northern Jersey you from? I lived in a town called Ridgewood for about 10 years, thus the reason I ask.

I agree, your humidor is likely over primed :) Definently don't wipe it down any more. I would recommend putting your beads back in. In the meantime (until you get a digital hygrometer) if you calibrate the outdoor one you were using before, you can monitor humidity until you are able to calibrate a digital one. I myself am relatively new to cigars but BOTL is a GREAT place for help. I would recommend using the link below to post a thread in the AskRon forum regarding your humidor issues. Fellow members (more knowledgeable than me) frequently look at these and are super great with offering advice. I would indicate the size of your humidor (40-50 count), the beads your are using, how you primed your unit, and what you are doing to get the humidity down. Before long you'll be back in business!

I'm almost at the point where I'm ready to buy some sticks for my humi and will give the Warlock a try seeing as you really enjoyed it.

Welcome to the forum!
