Cigary really helped me out with my storage problem. I was getting bitter, tight drawing cigars.

He recommended using cat litter to keep humidity at 65%. He explained the whole process and answered all my questions.

I followed just a few simple steps and have been at 65% for about a week. Just need a spritz of h2o if it drops to64%. My smokes since then have been all good.

Thanks Cigary!

So glad to hear that it is working for you as it has helped so many of us who have had issues with RH. This isn't something to dredge up for a debate but rather to help all of us choose something that will be easy and yet effective. We all tend to worry about RH and it can drive us batshyte crazy in trying to lock in a number that we want. KL is something that you can almost set your watch by it...I have 25 humidors and I can set almost to the number of what it is I want. It pretty much keeps the environment so stable for months that if anything...if the number goes down by 2 or 3% all it takes is a spritz or two to bring it right back to the RH you want. For the cost of distilled water and KL it's almost nothing. For those who use beads this is just an alternate choice for those who want something that has proven itself over and over. If it's good enough for museum curators to help care for priceless works of art I think it will do wonders for controlling RH for my cigars.

I'm ready to get on the KL bandwagon....Quick question.

Do I need a shallow dish or can I put it in mesh bags/ nylons? :scratchhe

The reason that I ask is that I am space limited in my Coolidor (too many sticks)

Fellas...I'm always open to PM's and don't want to get others riled up with the KL vs Beads thing. If you really are interested I'd be glad to answer any questions you have.

To bdrupe....I've learned that with KL you get the best results when you put it in a shallow container. There are so many ways to accomplish this...I have taken plastic cups and cut off the top part and left a container that is an inch deep and I use those for humidors that are 75-150 cigar counts. There are tupperware containers that are about 3 to 5 inches long and 2 or 3 inches wide. You are wanting to let the KL have as much surface exposure to the humidor as possible so that is why you need a shallow container. A nylon or mesh bag will 'bunch' up the whole thing and you won't get much surface exposure in your humidor. Since you have a coolider that is almost full you'd want to empty just enough to keep it at about 3/4 full...overcrowding any humidor, tupperador, coolidor will not promote an even distribution of RH...you do need some empty space for air flow so that will leave you more than enough room for the shallow container of KL. Also, remember NEVER to introduce more distilled water into the KL as some think they need to spray it quite a bit. It's important that you leave the KL without adding ANY distilled water..you need to see where your RH is before adding DW. After you wait the first 8 hours then see where the RH is..usually it comes in at the low 60's....that is when you will add the first couple of spritzes...just do 2 or 3 quick sprays unless your container is larger. Once you've given it a few sprays then wait a few hours...4 hours can give you a pretty accurate reading unless your coolerador is big. PM me for more pertinent info as to size and I can give you a table that I made up that will help get you there quicker than if I am just guessing.

I never had to spray dw on the kl in my wineador. I put approximately 2 pounds in a tupperware container. Let it sit for three days with a calibrated hygrometer. When it went to 65%rh@65*, I put three boxes in and my singles on two shelves on spanish cedar sheets. Works quite well. No issues at all, except when I open the door for a while, it goes to 68-69rh. But when the door is shut, it goes back down to 65rh.

Yep....some never have to use DW ever and that's a testament to how well this stuff works. When you open and shut the door the wineador will do it's job by reaclimating the environment as it was built to do but the KL does what it does best as well...control RH and at 65% you can't beat it.

Martin3203.......the guy who trained me in the use of KL had already been using it for 4 years prior...4 years...and he's now going on 6 w/o a hitch. The people he learned from in the uses of KL are people who are curators in museums that work with million dollar pieces of art that need a stable environment. I don't know that there is even an efficacy of 10 years or more but here's the good news..I do know it lasts at least for 10 years and when you consider that the cost vs any other RH media....you can buy KL at around $17 for 8 pounds and just the cost of 10 years at $17...well, you do the math as to what your relative savings are. Now....trust me..I happen to believe that KL will last indefinably according to those who have used it for at least that amount of time and it's never degraded....so....at the very least 10 years is a pretty amazing mount of time. I am just now going on a little over 3 years with 26 humidors now....every single one of them runs like a Swiss Watch...if the RH goes down 2% one or two spritzes brings it right back for months.

Thanks Cigary43. How much is needed to run and stay at a solid RH? I've only been using 3 bags. Today I've added more. Is there an equation on how much should be used for the amount of cigars your storing in one unit?
