To give fellow Brothers out there who aren't familiar with the pain we Canucks go through, below is a comparison of Canadian vs US dolla$ for 7 sticks I recently bought. Canadian pricing is what I had to pay at my B&M, US pricing is what I found for the EXACT same cigars I bought in Canada, except through one of BOTL's sponsors in the US. There was 1 stick I couldn't find through a BOTL sponsor but was able to find through another US online retailer. Two I shouldn't be able to find in the US at all because I purchased genuine Cuban sticks:
Canadian Pricing
1. Padron 2000 Natural -- $19.96
2. Joya De Nicaragua Antano Alisado -- $14.95 See note #1
3. Cuaba Exclusivo -- $23.45 See note #2
4. Cohiba Sigle VI -- $51.41 See note #2
5. Upmann Royal Robusto -- $25.50
6. Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente -- $19.60
7. CAO Golden Honey Petite -- $8.75
American Pricing
1. Padron 2000 Natural -- $5.10 (BOTL Sponsor Price)
2. Joya De Nicaragua Antano Alisado -- $7.22 (BOTL Sponsor Price)
3. Cuaba Exclusivo -- Not Available Through A US Retailer
4. Cohiba Sigle VI -- Not Available Through A US Retailer
5. Upmann Royal Robusto -- $7.85 (non BOTL Sponsor Price)
6. Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente -- $4.69 (BOTL Sponsor Price)
7. CAO Golden Honey Petite -- $3.40 (BOTL Sponsor Price)
Difference (Canadian minus US)
1. Padron 2000 Natural -- $14.86
2. Joya De Nicaragua Antano Alisado -- $7.73
3. Cuaba Exclusivo -- N/A
4. Cohiba Sigle VI -- N/A
5. Upmann Royal Robusto -- $17.65
6. Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente -- $14.91
7. CAO Golden Honey Petite -- $5.35
Canadian Total (All 7 Cigars): $163.62
Canadian Total (Cigars 1,2, 5, 6, and 7 only): $88.76
US Total (Cigars 1,2, 5, 6, and 7 only): $28.26
Difference Between US and Canadian Prices (Cigars 1,2, 5, 6, and 7 only): $60.50
#1 = This Canadian price was made possible after an EARTH-SHATTERING discount of one dollar and sixty-five cents!!!
#2 = Both of these sticks I bought were Cuban. I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find them on a US site somewhere but they're illegal in the US anyways so I didn't bother.
***Important to note that these prices are for SINGLES.***
I didn't buy from an online retailer in the US because I was hoping to hold out until I was able to access the marketplace here. By Saturday, just a few days shy of my big day. . . I caved. I have now seen the light and will never pay Canadian retail again (thanks for that line bdc30 . Even though cigars that enter Canada are taxed based on Canadian retail pricing, our sponsors have very reasonable shipping rates and that combined with taxes charged by customs would probably still be less than visiting a tobacconist in the Great White North.
What are prices like in your stomping grounds?
