Just got back from an overseas trip and. All the Duty frees are selling. Johnny Walker .. Platinum..

I couldn't resist it .. The box drew me in..

Cost me $100, cheaper than Blue..

And it says she's 18 years old. Blue doesn't say how old she is.

Anyway I cracked it tonight...

Heavy heavy smoky flavor..very smooth

I still prefer Double black, but for special occasions this is good stuff.

FYI..the guys The duty free claim this can only be bought from Duty Free Shops.

Might have to keep my eyes out for this when traveling. Haven't had double black yet though... should try that first.

Just how smooth is it? Honestly, my biggest problem with JW Blue is that it's too smooth and boring. My favorite in the line is Green, which is spicy and peaty. I might be interested in this if the flavor profile is exciting, but if it's at all like the Blue I will give it a pass.

Double black is a $40 bottle that I personally cannot get enough of.
I wish I had those kinds of prices around here. Living in a college town, they run the prices way up on anything that isn't Karkov, Natty Ice, or Smirnoff.

I've had red, black, and green. The green was AWESOME!

Isn't all JW blended? Does the age make that much difference in multi-mash/multi-malt whiskey? I thought the point of blending was added consistency and smoothness...?

Anyway, looks pretty cool, not a bad price for 18yo whiskey regardless.

Did some checking and looks like lucky brothers in England can buy this in stores. Everyone else needs to hit up a duty free

yup, all johnny's are blended malt whiskey, but that doesn't mean they cannot use an age appellation. blended just means they buy the juice(s) elsewhere; IIRC there are a fixed number of distilleries in scotland. they have a blend bill like bourbon has a mash bill, where their "ingredients" are distilled spirits: X percent by volume this dram at that age, Y percent of that dram at that age. then, possibly, more barrel age once blended. to call this 18yr, all the constituent whiskies need to be 18 yr from distillation, aged.

take this from someone who listens to too many industry people, but has never been to scotland. o)

also, for the longest time, green was off shore only. also looks to be going that way again soon, be forewarned.

Ok so I need to know from anyone that has had the JW Platitum, is it worth it. My wife is going to Cancun soon so should I ask her to get a bottle?
I drink mostly Bourbon but I love JW Blue, but is it worth it?

I just found this thread, and it was a great heads up. I am going out of the country next month and gonna keep my eyes out for this one. Thanks.

Anyone know if this is available in the Caribbean dutyfree shops? Specifically cruise ship terminals, etc.?
