Hello everyone,

after being a cigarette smoker for over 15 years I recently quit smoking and am currently smoke free for over a week. I control my cravings with nicotine lozenge. The thing is I really cannot imagine myself as a non smoker for the rest of my life - especially when I imagine drinking a nice bourbon with friends.

That is actually how I started to research about cigars and it is slowly becoming kind of a hobby for me. I recently bought a five pack of Romeo and Julietas puritos, which I have on me at all times - but didnt smoke one yet. Yesterday I decided to start a small collection of cigars and got myself a small simple humidor. As part of my first collection I bought myself two Cohiba Siglo IV's at a local tabacco store - but i have a feeling that they are fake. There was no seal, just a barcode and the price was $ 8.50. I went to a real cigar store to compare the prices and there the price for one was $ 33. So it is either totally overpriced or the one I got is fake. I attached a picture - what do you think?

Anyway when I was looking for a online community I simply googled for cigar forum and decided to create an account here - since I really loved your name. My goals here are to communicate, get hints on what are nice everyday smokes (I am thinking Montecristo, Cohiba or Romeo y Julietas Clubs or Puritos) and of course I would like to know what should be my first cigar to go along with my favorite whisky for example.

Hello and welcome!
I'm no expert, but the lettering for the "Cohiba" just looks a bit off. Again that's my non expert opinion, but I'm sure others will chime in. Either way, enjoy this place and learn!!

The photo is a little bit hard to see and I am not an expert but if you only paid $8.50 for them my guess is that they are fakes. For your own intellectual curiosity, here is a good website that you can use to check whether or not something may be a fake http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/ After looking at the website, it seems that the gold color on the band is not correct. I also noted that the band on your cigar has three rows of "dots" on the top while the real band should have 5 rows. That being said I'm afraid that they are more than likely fakes.

Again, welcome to BOTL!

Welcome to BOTL brother!

Yes it's hard to tell from the picture, but from what I can tell, the band definitely looks off. The Cohiba lettering looks way off. Use the link above to research all cuban cigars which shows pictures of all cigars and bands. But the biggest tell is the price difference from the questionable shop to the legitimate one, if in fact the higher priced one is legitimate.

If you are just starting out in cigars, I would recommend buying some Petit Coronas or cheaper cigars of different brands to see what flavor profile you like. Look for the Ramon Allones Small Club Coronas, Por Larranaga PC, Partagas Short, Bolivar PC or Coronas Jr etc. Obviously you can buy whatever is in your price range, but the smaller cigars are cheaper and are really good in my opinion.

Just be careful that smoking cigars won't keep you interested in cigarettes!

Have fun in the search!

wow. thank you all for the warm welcome. yes istanbul is a great city. i checked the provided link and they are for sure fake ones. i ll try to return them at the tabacco store - lets see what kind of reaction i will receive.

yesterday i tried my first romeo and julieta purito and i hated it. all i tasted was hot bitterness. decided i will get some petit coronas like recommended and start sampling. and dont worry aboutbthe cigarettes - thisbis something completely different for me.

anyway thanks again for all the responses.
